Wondering if a EVGA GTX 480 is dead?

Go to solution Solved by helping,

Hello, I was wondering my friend lend me his GTX 480 to test it out because it was having problems and wouldn't work after installing the drivers.

It boots okay with no problems but when I get to the login screen I get a bunch of dots and lines all over the screen.

I tried to install the drivers but when the screen goes black to change the res to 1080p it doesn't come back. It stays black... I can still hear windows sounds but I get no image.

We even tested it on other rigs and it does the same.

I was wondering if is something fixable or do I just declare it dead? Help me techtips forums you're my only hope hahah  :D .

cool for 1 hour, dress it up again and throw it in the thing and try to post

A) Successful post? cool

B) ):

In the event of scenario B, repeat the process at 405f, allowing more time to cool.

C) Still not working as intended? Well they make fine wall ornaments and cup holders.

if heat was the solution a gtx480 could fix most dead cards not be one of them.

buy a heat gun, i did the oven trick and melted the card, might of been a mistake on my part but id guess its easier to do with a dedicated gun.

He said he tried it in a different rig.

With the same or different monitor cable?

I had a similar issue. It was a defective cable.

If it is an EVGA card it should have a warranty still.

It's not, I have tried even different outputs cables and monitors.

I do happen to own a heat gun. Anyone has any good tutorial or video that shows how it's done?

An oven with an accurate thermostat is much more reliable.

Heating it with a heat gun evenly and to the correct temperature to reactivate the metals is difficult.

Fuck it. I'm tired of having it around and I decided to bake it.

It's on cooldown right now. Will post pictures and mark as solved if it worked :D *crosses fingers*

If it works I'm going to push my luck with another dead HD 6950 that I want to crossfire.

It worked! It managed to boot and install drivers. But temps where up to 80 degrees Celsius. I had some crappy thermal compound laying around so i slapped that in. still need to test the temps tho. In game it went up to 90-100 degrees.

Maybe I'll buy some nice thermal compound for this one.
