Hey guys,

I'm gonna buy a new gaming/work laptop, where I can do serious gaming as well as use it for school. I've been using a 2012 MacBook Pro 13 till now and I am comfortable with the MacOS environment, but I cannot game on it. I am looking for a 15 inch laptop with at least 240-300 hz refresh rate, which can be carried around. I'd prefer 300hz over a 240hz one. I was thinking of Razer, but there are also some Asus ones and of course there is the good ol' Alienware. Price is not a matter. Thanks for the help.

I mean, there are only a couple of laptops out that feature a 300Hz display anyway, so that kind of narrows it down.

Whether you'd actually notice an improvement with 300Hz over 240Hz, which already isn't that much more impressive compared to 144Hz, is another story.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

especially with quarantine, if you want to drop that much on computers just buy a nice desktop, but from my quick research just now, I only think the asus one is available to buy

Why ? I mean you are not going to have that many FPS with any laptop since laptop GPUs are slower...

Oh that's why you belong to the target group that likes what's shiny :P sorry for that :P sarcasm aside,

Are you sure that you need a gaming laptop?

What I mean is are you sure that its necessary for you to game outside your home (also have in mind that gaming with a battery doesnt only mean even lower FPS than what you could get by pluging the laptop into the power grid it also means that you can do so for 1 hour maybe 3 -on very extreme powersaving cases- until the laptop shuts down because the batter will be depleted  also if you plan to connect the laptop on the mains when you are gaming its not so portable because laptops with decent graphics cards have bulky power adapters wich you have to carry around and they will accumulate all sorts of nastiness if you lay them down in public places which youll have to do because the cable is shorter towards the powergrid than towards the laptop)

On top of that most have mushy keyboards or atleast much worse keyboards than what you can get on a dektop

The monitor angle and position (since its going to be attached to the keyboard) isnt ideal and as you said it needs to be a small monitor...

last but not least "gaming" laptops while not so gamery as explained above are ridiculously expensive.....

So maybe instead of spending 2000 to 3000$ to get a gaming laptop why not getting a portable decent laptop or chromebook you can carry around for school and which would have a big battery life (gaming laptops dont have much of a battery life even if you are not gaming)

and buy your self a desktop PC which would have better FPS performance for the same money (both laptop and desktop compared to the cost of a gaming laptop with a 240-300hz monitor etc)

Your gaming experience will be night and day much better on any metric and you may end up spending less or atleast the same amount of money.

Hey man, thanks a lot for the advice. I had a problem though... We do not have any 300 hz monitors yet right? So would a 240hz one be enough?

Asus has a display that runs at 280hz. That being said- you most likely will not tell the difference between 144 and 240, let alone 240 and anything higher

Is the Asus one that you are talking about worth buying over the new Alienware 25 inch IPS 240hz one ?

I have a strong dislike for Asus, based on some past experiences with them- so maybe. Depends on the display you're talking about.

Have you used high refresh rate displays before?
