CPU core multiplier won't overclock above 41

I'd also suggest giving Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility a try.

I have an i7 4820k (3.7 ghz base/3.9 ghz turbo by default), and going to the overclock menu in the BIOS only lets me go up to a 41 multiplier. Changing the voltage doesn't let me crank it higher either. The overclock shows in windows so am I missing something major here? Are some motherboards just locked past a certain multiplier?

 

MOBO is an oem HP X79 (Pegatron 2ACE)

OC support on OEM stuff has always been awful. Wrong board for the task.

Are these arbitrarily "locked" multipliers common on other oem boards?

I'd watch that voltage, 1.52V will kill any CPU that new

Give ThrottleStop a try.

There should be a TRL button that will let you access the Turbo Ratio Limits.  The OEM might have locked these limits in the BIOS but sometimes they forget.  Post a screenshot so I can have a look. 

 

If these limits are not locked, you should be able to do some overclocking within Windows as long as your BIOS voltage is set appropriately.

It won't let me go higher than 41 here either

Press the TRL button at the lower, middle right. Show me a screen shot of that window. It should show in there if overclocking is locked or available.

Yeah it is, I was playing around in XTU and it seems to be working just fine above 41

When using ThrottleStop, after increasing the turbo ratios, you need to go back to the main screen and increase the Set Multiplier value. Check that box and click on the Turn On button.

 

More of a hassle compared to XTU. Some users have trouble with XTU not being consistent. Keep ThrottleStop handy just in case.
