My keyboard stopped working after update!

Go to solution Solved by Applefreak,

If it's Windows you want to format the drive and do a clean install. However I'd bet on a driver issue. Rather than updating drivers you should remove them all. Easiest way would be to wipe the laptop (backup first) and do a clean install. If that's not an option, remove all drivers. Windows should be able to fall back to it's default drivers. Unless you are playing games, that will likely not be an issue. I am guessing you are already running an external keyboard, right? Is the track pad affected as well or just the keyboard?

If you need to keep the data, you can reinstall windows by using microsoft's software download tool and then select to do a full install rather then upgrading or repairing it. My recommendation though would be to boot off a usb drive and do a clean install once the drive has been wiped.

Hey all,

I recently got a new laptop and have been using it for about a month.

Yesterday after finishing a game I was playing my computer crashed. Thinking it was just an odd occurrence I just rebooted it and then continued to brows the web. After making a Youtube video full screen it crashed again.

I checked for updates and I had one for windows 10 and a driver update for NVIDIA. I proceed with the updates and then restarted my computer. After it finisher restarting I went to long in and the keyboard stopped working.

I am using a ASUS TUF Gaming FX705. I currently am using the on screen keyboard but I am not about to type an essay on it.

I have spent the past day searching for a solution for this issue.

Here is the list of things I have done. If you have anything that could help even in the slightest it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Uninstalled the keyboard drivers
  • Updated the keyboard drivers using the automatic updater (ASUS don't have a keyboard driver on their website from what I could see)
  • Updated the following drivers from the MyASUS app
    • VGA drivers
    • BIOS
    • Audio
    • LAN
    • Pointing Device
    • Utilities
    • Wireless
    • Chipset
    • Bluetooth
  • I also installed the hotfix for the BIOS

None of this worked so I rang ASUS and they said to try re-installing windows, so I did.

It didn't work.

I then did an update check and updated everything and rebooted then tried again. No luck.

I tried uninstalling the drivers in safe mode and then reinstalling them but that also didn't work.

Just to note. The keyboard still works in the BIOS but not within windows 10 its self.

ASUS then said to send it in to be fixed, but the one service centre they have in New Zealand is not considered an essential service and so I cant get it fixed until at least the 22 of April.

Once again any help is appreciated.

I will try a wipe now but no, I don't have an external keyboard just the on screen keyboard that I operate with my mouse

Ah that sucks, sorry to hear that. I've used this method after spilling tea on my old keyboard for two weeks because amazon was on strike and local shops were out of inventory.

Thank you very much, would not have realised that I needed to create a boot drive to properly reinstall windows.
