I changed pc cases and I had to use extensions to hide the cables to my cpu header from my AIO cooler water block and it shutdown a couple times. After third time upon reboot it said cpu overheated. I felt the back of the MB it wasn’t really hot at all. I removed  the extensions. The computer stopped shutting down and ran normal. I played D2 with no crashes or anything. Do you think there could have been permanent damaged/shortened lifespan to my CPU or was there motherboard and cpu failsafes to prevent damage to it? Ryzen 3900x, MSi gaming pro carbon WiFi. By the way pc wasn’t on very long before shut down. My guess is that the fan extensions weren't compatible. I’m just worried there might be permanent damage or a shortened lifespan to my CPU. It seems to run fine now after extensions were removed.

There are many fail safes built in to prevent permanent damage.

To put your mind at ease, and I wouldn't suggest trying this...... but I VERY accidentally did it with a used machine I was working on getting ready to sell on craigslist. As I was getting ready to put Windows on it, I turned it on and walked away for about an hour, by the time I got back, I realized I never put a heat sink on the CPU AT ALL!!! I immediately unplugged it from the wall and was sure I just toasted a CPU. I felt the IHS and about burned my finger right off. Once I got a heat sink on it and windows installed, I ran AIDA64 on it for 24 hours and it didn't have a single issue, thermals all looked good!

Moral of the story is, the CPU will go into a very low power state, downclock itself to protect it thermally, and eventually turn off as yours did. So, I wouldn't worry about damage :).

It is strange the extension cables didn't work though, but glad it working fine without them.

Sounds like you bought some crap high impedance extensions that barely work.  I don’t think you could have hurt anything.  Failsafes on modern CPUs like that are extremely robust.  As @5x5 said if it still works it still works.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
