Compatible sockets is just one part of it. Both the chipset and BIOS have to support the CPU as well. In some cases (like the newer Ryzens) all that's needed is a BIOS update to get a newer CPU to work. However that requires the manufacturer to make such an update available.

In case of pre-built computers manufacturers sometimes do the exact opposite. The BIOS may contain a black- or whitelist that explicitly blocks certain CPUs or only allows very specific CPUs. Afaik HP is one of those that do this.

is there a way i can make my q8300 work

Search for the motherboard's manual online. Take a look at which chipset it has and which CPUs are supported by it. Maybe you're lucky and there's a BIOS update available, but I doubt that. If the chipset and/or BIOS doesn't support the CPU or HP has explicitly blacklisted the CPU there's not much you can do.

Applefreak is spot on with the list. Was also looking around and found some old posts about people trying a couple quad cores but no success as they are not supported. So basically it's a no go.

Dang it Well thanks for help guys this forum is the best

Does depend on what the purpose is tho. Cheap temp gaming system? A old i7 dell prebuilt will do as the psu is easy user replaceable and for about 250 you have a i7 2600 with 8-16gb of ram a 240gb or larger ssd and a rx 580. But as you said there are plenty of really crappy ones.

again its not a given.. a) on some of them you have to find a specific PSU because not all fit b) there might be a GPU compatibility limitation so you cant upgrade to a better GPU because it wont run... happens all the time its seems a good deal and if you get it all setup it will do its job but upgrades are gonna be a pain in the arse and you wished you gave 100$ or so more to get a used custom build one.

Oh yes not saying that all are like that. A lot have these 25 or 35w limits on the pcie slot or some stupid proprietary connector a bios lock and whatnot I'm well aware of that. You always have to do your research well before going used.

Found an e6750 for 2 bucks

well you can test it but most likely it wont work (atleast from what Applefreak pasted because it says FSB 533/800) the 6xxx series have FSB 1066 or 1333 so bad luck but then again since is so cheap you dont lose something to try

otherwise go for an Core 2 Duo E4700
