Hi all, so during some minecraft the other day I noticed that the game is only using 2GB of my memory. I have 8GB of DDR3 RAM @1600MHz installed in my computer so why is minecraft only using 2GB? I have an i5 4460 @3.20GHz and a GTX 1060 6GB version and I get around 40 fps in game with all settings maxed. I'm positive I should be getting more performance from this. PLEASE HELP!! Thank you :)

If you feel like it needs more memory (which unmodded Mincraft apparently doesn't), you can change a setting:

Quote

1. Open your Minecraft client (Java version).
2. Select the Installations tab towards the top of the launcher.
3. Hover over your desired profile/Minecraft version, then select the button with the three dots on the right.
4. Select Edit from the drop-down menu. A modal will appear and More Options will be available in the bottom-left. Select this.
5. In the "JVM arguments" field, change -Xmx1G  to -Xmx#G , replace # with the amount of RAM you'd like to allocate to Minecraft in GB (do not modify any other text).
6. Select the green Save button and you're done!

Because it's running in a Java VM which the devs have allocated it to 2gb. That's all it needs, but you can modify launch code to allocate it more.

Well then what could be the reason for my low performance? I'm sure my rig should be getting more than 40fps??

cranking settings.. for that cpu.. 40fps sounds about right.

if you insist, you can adjust allocation somewhere in the launcher (cant tell you where, i dont use the official launcher)

protip for making minecraft actually run properly: set your viewing distance to 8-10 chunks, any more is a hilareous amount of diminishing returns.

Is this modded settings? (my kids don't do the mods for some reason....)

whatcha mean by cranked up? What's there to crank up haha?

primarily.. render distance is the biggest pain.
