this is a solid deal, really good value. Other laptops around this price have 1660ti’s which are good, but the 2060 is clearly better.

Try to find similar but with a 9750h

I'd recommend Dell G7 7790

or the 15.6" equivalent

An i5 9300h is worse than a Ryzen 7 3750h. It has 8gb ram, and to when you upgrade to a 2060 it’s already $50 more then the TUF laptop I suggested.

You can’t get 16gb ram or an i7 under $1200

I didn't say you could I was just saying the model is more than just the i5 varient you saw. You can get pretty close depending on the retailer, but the Ryzen 7, RTX 2060 Asus laptop you linked is the better deal over all of the Dell G7's I could find. And the Ryzen 7 is a perfectly good processor for gaming.

If OP/OP's friend was fine with going "used" and wasn't afraid of a scratch or two they could pick up the $1250, Dell G7 with an i7-9750h, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD, and 1660ti for $945 from the Amazon Warehouse with a Used - Very Good rating. https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Gaming-Windows-i7-9750H-G7790-7662GRY-PUS/dp/B07RCP7ZV8/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=dell%2Bg7%2Bi7&qid=1585063191&sr=8-3&th=1

Avoid Asus FX and Dell G7, runs hot.
