How does the firewall even work?

When it prompts me to select if its private or public network (everytime i open a game mostly) I choose private or public? I choosed private previously and I think I should have clicked public. Did I fuck up? now peple can connect to my computer throught these games?

 

I've disabled sharing printer and files in the ehternet adapter thing anyway tho.

You should choose public - at least if you want to play online. Private gives you only access to local network at home.

Different rules apply to private and public networks. I seriously doubt that you could get hurt tru the ports most games use...if you block their access tru the firewall you will not be able to connect to the game servers therefore you are either exposed to their ports or you're offline in regards to the game's servers. 

You can choose the kind of network you're connected to so that the automatic rules are applied adequately. You can change these rules manually if you want to. I wouldn't worry playing mainstream, AAA games and even most indie ones. Just avoid allowing access to games literally noone has ever downloaded...it prompts you with the default selected option (tick on private or public) according to the kind of network you've already set up. 

 

tldr; just choose public for games.

pretty much.

You can always research a given process prompting you a firewall allowance to make sure it's not some shady crap (outside of common games) and block it if needed.

I have to block 50.exe files inside a folder, are you saying they didn't add an option to add all of the folder files at the same time? shits retarded

yeah unless there is some kind of a powershell command for it, or a regedit script, I don't think you can block a whole folder from the firewall advanced settings panel. It's annoying.

Firewall App Blocker is nice tool to add every executable in directory (and subdirectories) to Windows Firewall. If you want block programs, you need outbound rules only (every program must send request before receive any packets).

 

You cannot block directory, just files, that is how firewall works - per file. It's not antivirus that scans every file so you can add folder to exceptions. Firewall activates when some process (executable file) wants to connect to internet.

 

Some programs like Comodo Firewall monitors all - inbound and outbound connections. Some, like Windows Firewall, monitor only inbounds (outbounds are always allowed unless you add them manually as exception - and Firewall App Blocker is useful here).

 

Remember that if you use Windows Firewall, you must block outbound connection before you run program. In Comodo Firewall you will be notified about outbound connections (if you setup it that way) and you may block them after execute.

 

Is very hard to find Comodo Firewall now on Comodo website - now they force to download whole packet with their AV etc. But it's still possible to find Comodo Firewall installer on other sites and it will not be outdated because Comodo updates modules from their programs (firewall is one of them, AV security is another etc.). Yeah I actually wasn't aware of this program, it's kinda cute, I like it It could probably do the trick with some tweaking.

Pretty sure you can block a whole folder by messing around with it's permissions (group policy editor)? Could be wrong tho....

I tested most of firewalls and TinyWall was not so good. It makes some problems. Maybe that was old version. I tested ZoneAlarm and it was pretty good, but not as good as Comodo. Sunbelt (old Kerio) was my favorite, but it no longer exist and works only on old os (XP and 32bit Vista). Now it's called Vipre, but you can't install just firewall and it's paid. So Comodo or Widows Firewall with additional tools. Read my previous post.
