Hey everyone,

Im in the process of building my first pc, and i really want to mount my gpu verticially.

The problem is that i pretty much ran out of budget, and pci-e risers and vertical mounting brackets are unreasonably priced.

My question is: Can i use these cheap pci-e risers, and are there any drawback to using them other than visuals.

Thanks for the replies in advance.

The pci-e riser you have pictured is a x1 slot to a x16 slot which means your GPU would be limited to x1 speeds. This would likely be quite noticeable and is definitely not recommended. I have one of those for my F@H rig and even there I see a drop in performance.

Those risers are made for mining rigs that do not need to transfer much data between the gpu and the system.

Edit: I would recommend if you are on a tight budget put it all into the GPU and just run it non-vertically for now. Upgrade with a vertical kit and a riser once you have a little extra money down the line.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Should also check if anyone has tested the $3 risers from aliexpress

I have one of those, but never actually tried it - had just thrown it in the cart along with other stuff one day long ago. Note they're rated at PCIe 1.0...

This one's only $13

This looks more sound,  looks pretty similar in construction to ADTs.

I have an ADT one, this precisely in 30cm version and it works great:

Eh, isolation and all, figured I'd try and took out my old Q8200 mobo - surprisingly it seems fine, at least up to PCIe 2.0 which that platform has. Tried a bus-powered GT1030 and a GTX970, both run fine including under load.

So I guess for $3 it might be worth trying, not a guaranteed fail...

I might be able to try a modern PCIe 3.0 system, let's see...

15, and neither impedance controlled nor shielded as it should be... so yes it's pretty surprising it works.
