Hey there guys, been watching linus for a while now, and got an IT background of myself, but can't figure this one out!

here are my specs:

Intel core i5-4690k @3.5Ghz

16 GB RAM

Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super

(this should be sufficient i guess)

So i recently upgraded my GPU from a GTX 970 to the RTX 2070 Super, and a 4K TV (LG 49SM90) (with G-sync i might add).

But since i upgraded my gpu i have actually noticed an upgrade in performance, but not significantly!

Now this weekend i tried out the Assassins Creed Odyssey free weekend, and i just couldnt get my frames above 45! Wether i play it 2K or 1080p, it also doenst matter what settings i put the game on (it runs the same on low as it does on ultra).

I think this is weird because people on the internet are getting 60+ fps on lower cards than mine.

So i was wondering is it my CPU thats bottlenecking? I've been thinking the same thing with other games tbh but now its really starting to annoy me.

Hope you guys can help me out!

Peace,

Jim

Probably yes, it's not bad by any mean but the 2070 super is a beast in its own right so consider upgrading your cpu to a 6 core even a 2600 should be fine as that card can easily push 4k 60+ without Ray-Tracing

Going to say you need add the caveat of Low/Medium settings for 4K.

2070 Super is a 1440p card really, not a 4K card.

OP - You need to compare apples to apples, when you say people are getting 60+ with lower cards... they're getting that in 1080p or 1440p but not 4K.

Yeah I should upgrade shouldn't I? But is it worth overclocking my cpu and smacking on a cooler or just going for an upgrade?

A quad core i5 is pretty terrible in assassin's Creed, Odyssey was known to chew up CPU cores like mad.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

I think you need to OC and then by a more appropriate monitor.  1080p or 1440p.

I'm gaming at 1440p because 4k isn't in reach but the strange thing is I don't see any difference between 1080 and 1440 performance wise

probably. an i7-4770K would be decent but 6 core CPus have shown to be pretty ideal for AC Odyssey, so consider a 1600AF and some DDR4.

Correct.

This is a true sign of CPU bottlenecking.

You can overclock the i5-4690K (e.g. 4.6GHz ~ 4.8 GHz), but you are somewhat limited by the number of cores, and the Haswell CPU architecture itself.

Upgrading the CPU to a new platform would require at least...

  • New CPU (obviously)
  • New compatible motherboard
  • Switch to DDR4 RAM

AMD Ryzen 9000 Rig

  • AMD R7 9800X3D + Alphacool CORE 1 w/ Performance Mount Kit + Thermal Grizzly AM5 Contact Frame
  • Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro Ice
  • 32GB (16GB X2) G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5-6400
  • Sapphire NITRO+ 6800 XT Special Edition + EKwb Full Cover Block
  • Custom Loop w/ 2x 360mm Radiators
  • WD SN850X + WD SN750 + Samsung 980
  • EVGA P2 850W + Red/White CableMod Cables
  • Lian-Li O11 Dynamic EVO XL

AMD Ryzen 5000 Rig

  • AMD R7-5800X

  • 32GB (16GB X 2) Crucial Ballistix RGB DDR4-3600

Yeah I was afread of that, cus the upgrade will cost me a lot more... This build was from 2015 and I've changed out pretty much everything but the mobo, cpu and ram...

Overclocki g your cpu will not add the cores and threads your need for modern games...an upgrade is mandatory.

I would recommend a ryzen 5 3600 with b450 board and 16gb or ddr4 ram ideally 3400mhz or faster ram.

Yeah I'm running a ddr3 now if I'm not mistaken. I guess it's time to upgrade

Yeah if you'd bought a i7-4790k you could still be using it a bit....but the quad core i5 with only 4 threads has been struggling for a while already....

Might even consider the ryzen 7 3700x if you can afford it and you won't upgrade often....8 cores will last even longer..

.but 3600 is fine for at least next gen games (ps5...)
