Advice for PC Update

Spartan.PC

Hey all,

I've been debating with myself if I should upgrade my PC or not. Just for quick reference here is my current build:

MOBO: Asus Z97 Deluxe

CPU: i7 4790K

GPU: EVGA GTX 780

RAM: G.Skil Trident X 16gb DDR3-2400

STORAGE: Crucial MX100 512gb, 2TB Spinner

PSU: EVGA SuperNova 850 G2

My debate is that I don't really game too much on my PC anymore since having a kid with another on the way. Eventually as the kids get older I will have more time and see myself getting back into PC gaming. I would also like to get into Sim Racing at some point as I am an avid car enthusiast and always wanted to do it, just don't have the space right now for a cockpit rig.

If I were to try to get back into PC gaming with the future plan to build a Sim Racing/ PC gaming rig, what would you recommend as an upgrade path?

Or should I leave it as is for now and deal with being a console gamer until I'm ready to make the leap into Sim Racing and start from scratch then?

More or less just interested in what a decent upgrade path for me would be or if it's not even worth it and I just need to start from scratch.

TIA

If you're going to get back into gaming when the kids grow up... that's not in 6 months or a year, right?  :)

Build a whole new machine, and give that one to them.

Not a bad idea, just hard for me to get used to having a sub par PC, but I've neglected it for too long now I think (what I'm looking to see) and maybe I need to just suck it up and build fresh when the time is right.

i think your cpu is still decent and you could do with a GPU upgrade. depending on your budget, a 2060 super, 2070 super, rx5700 or rx5700xt will be good upgrades, the cpu will hold well (unless going for 144fps+)

Do you think that if I went with say a 2060 Super that there wouldn't be a bottleneck? I have never OCed a CPU before, as I'm not really against it, I do like the reliability of not.

Would I need to OC the CPU to make sure I'm getting everything out of the GPU and causing a bottleneck?

Your CPU is still very capable.  There may be a small bottleneck in some cases, but the overall performance increase with the 2060 super would be very good.  You wouldn't have to OC your CPU, but if it's something you are interested in I'd recommend it.

What about my RAM being DDR3-2400? Is that worth the upgrade to DDR4? Will I notice a difference?

You are asking us if you should upgrade but you are not giving any reasons for the upgrade. If you're gonna do that sim driving thing in the future then wait for the future and check back with us then but right now it looks to me like you want to upgrade just so you can literally never turn the PC on until.. the future.

Tech changes all the time and NVIDIA is releasing new cards this year which will jump us literally into the future since they will be a lot more powerful than usual. If you have no reason to upgrade and youre not planning on using the PC right now just go turn on your console and forget about your PC.

If you are wanting to play a game on PC let us know which so people can make a better decision. At the end of the day it's always about what game you want to play exactly. For all we know you only play League of Legends
