Dell XPS Problem

Go to solution Solved by Pickles von Brine,

So I have had a Dell XPS  M1710 since it came out. Got it from my dad in 2007 but there is a problem now. There are some green artifacts on the display (also show up on external monitor) Dell expert told me that it is a GPU failure. I am just wondering, is it worth buying a new GPU for $12 and install it myself or to buy a new laptop. I have been a huge fan of Dell laptops and really don't want to get rid of this one. Oh and also, if I apply pressure to the palm rest the artifacts go away but come back when I let go

Make sure to quote me @Meowster  so that I see your reply

I love my job, being a sysadmin. It's very fun

I'd start by opening up the laptop and seeing if something is loose/partially disconnected.  If you can push on the palm rest and the issue goes away that might be the case.

If the GPU is serviceable and you can find a replacement for that cheap you might as well give it a try.  Otherwise, it's a 13+ year old device and might just be time to replace it.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

this is a laptop right?
make sure you can actually remove your GPU, I know some of the older laptops they soldered to the MOBO
