If you want better sound quality, better headphones (from a real audio company) and an external amp/dac (like Fiio e10) would be the way to go. Sound cards don't really do anything an on-board chip cannot do these days, especially if you have a "gaming" headset.

You really don't need one. You won't be able to tell any difference.

Normally the overall audio quality from modern onboard audio and sound card are the same.
BUT the sound card is more likely to be louder and have extra feature that some people might like to have/use.

so it all depends on what you want from your pc audio. it you just want truer purer audio quality then an extenal audio dac might be an option too

I think the only really good reason to buy a soundcard these days is either you have high end headphones/amp etc and you have the kit to show up the Realtek's or you want good positional sound in games. Take a watch of the following with your headphones set in stereo mode and see which one you find most accurate and then use that:
