Plex help needed...it makes me cry.

I'm trying..and trying..and trying... to install PLEX on a windows 7 machine.

And I don't know what's going wrong.

I'm following this: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/how-to-use-plex,news-18589.html

But I keep winding up in a loop.

I download the server, install it. And it seems to start running.

I bring up the controls, I think...and navigate to "Your Media"....where it wants me to install the server...which I do, rinse and repeat.

I'm clearly doing something wrong, but I have no idea what.

Can someone help a befuddled beagle out?

You have it installed, but you just don't have any media for plex to display. If you have a library, direct plex to it

How do I point it to the large number of mp3s on the computer's hard drive?

Ok, I guess there is a plus there... but it takes me to the same page

I think I'm continuously stuck in clients, as opposed to configuring the server itself.

Yup.

Your befuddlement at least means this isn't a "me" thing, but an IT thing.

You don't have a Plex Server in your authorized devices, you only have players. I think you must have missed claiming the server, you can find the directions here https://support.plex.tv/articles/218136308-why-is-there-an-unclaimed-media-server-on-my-network/. The embedded web app you're navigating to in the browser is just a built in web player and not specifically the server admin console.

Ok.. that makes sense, but I'm not seeing the "Claim" buttons anywhere.

Letting Windows update itself, then retiring for the day and go make dinner...I'll try again tomororw.

Did you open the Plex Web App by right clicking the icon in the system tray? If not, I think that is where your issue is.

Ok..using the information from everyone, i specualted the problem was my last time trying to install and get Plex working on this system had some residue, and on that part i was right.

I had used a different email address for that one, so logged in, and found that account was claiming the server, despite the server it was claiming had long since been deleted from the machine.

I unclaimed that server, then deleted that account.... but Plex decided to delete the account I wasn't signed into somehow, which lead to several hours of trying to long into the new account and getting their "That username already exists message", whcih googling showed me has been a problem for years.

Eventually I speculated that it had deleted the new account and not the old account, which again I stress was the one I was signed in on (I know this because after I went through the delete account process, I saw the old email in the web interface as what I was logged in as...I thought it strange but assumed with something cached or cookied and if i refreshed the page it would go away...I just closed the browser and restarted).....SO, I again deleted the account..this time the old one since the new one was gone.

By this time, several hours had been sunk in this project again, though, rather than the despair it's been making me feel, I was just pissed,  So I'll try it again...tomorrow.
