Hello,

I have a dreamcast at home collecting dust(still working) and i have a game that i really want to play again(for nostalgia porposes) i have the cd but it's all scratch up now. It's has a low percent chance of reading the game.

Can i somehow clone the game to a new cd or something?

I never seen or read anything about anyone doing this. So i'm curious if its even possible.

Thank you!

If you want to attempt this, you would need to read into the copy protection the Dreamcast uses on their discs and what sort of piracy control the console has (to possibly checksum a disc and see it's a copy of the original).

I don't know how that works on the Dreamcast, so I am not sure if a simple clone of the disc wwill work or if the Dreamcast has any such protections.

Of course you have to keep in mind, if you don't think the console can play the disc, there is a low chance the PC (or whatever you use to copy the disc) can read the disc properly though.

I never thought of this. Good advice.

Modern Vintage Gamer has always had reliable on how copy protection works (or didn't work) on all sorts of consoles. I have not watched his SEGA Dreamcast video personally, but I assume it holds some valuable information for you too.

Of course I am sharing this information for the purposes of education and purposes of taking software you own and being able to still play it. I am not sharing this for the purposes of piracy.

Most of the copy protection was through the proprietary disc format (GD-ROM). Almost no drives can read them. If you want to dump them, the only easy way is to plug in a SD card adapter to you Dreamcast and dump the game with a boot disc and swap. Then you'll need to look into ripping non essential data from the dump if the game is over 750MB since GD-ROM goes up to 1GB.

TLDR... Dreamcast is a pain in the butt to backup and dump games from. You're better off swapping out the disc reader with one of the SD card reader replacements and call it a day.

Yeah, unless you can find one of the very few disc drives that can potentially read GD discs, you aren't gonna be able to do anything with the disc.
