Basically I am planning to upgrade my PC to Ryzen and since it's hard for me to understand some things I need somebody to explain few things to me like to a newcomer

-What exactly is 4th gen Ryzen compared to 3rd gen and is it coming to laptops exclusively? (everybody talking about 4th gen laptops but can't find info about desktop units)
-Is it worth it to wait?

-How does PCIe Gen4 translate to Gen3, my understanding is that 3rd gen devices will use half as much lanes when using Gen4 lanes (like 4x NVMe 3Gen using 2x 4Gen)

-And if so then if Ryzen CPU has 16 PCIe Gen4 lanes, does it mean it has 32 Gen3 lanes?

-What Chipset should I use if I don't need Gen4 slots but a lot of Gen3 lanes instead? (mobo recommendations appreciated, don't need a good overclocker or RGB, just some stable ATX)

-Is a R5 3600 Stock gonna bottleneck a GTX 1080 GamingX?

-And if not (a lot) then will a 2x8GB 3000MHz CL16 RAM be good enough for it?

Thanks in advance!

There is going to be 4th gen for laptops and another version for desktops I believe.

Depends on if you think there will be a good enough performance bump

No. x16 lanes is x16 lanes, it will operate in Gen3 or Gen4 mode but you won't get 2x Gen3 lanes from a Gen4 slot

Most 300, 400, 500 series boards for Ryzen chips are going to be limited to 20 PCIe lanes + whatever chipset lanes are available but mostly you're stuck with a couple x16 physical slots and a couple x1 slots. If you need a lot of PCIe slots/lanes then Threadripper is your go-to for AMD side of things.

No, it will not bottleneck in almost all cases

I would seriously consider looking for some 3600MHz RAM, in a lot of cases (not all of course) I've seen in on par or less than 3200 kits.

Why? Is there much of difference between lower frequency RAM?

My friend is considering upgrade from older Intel. And we're deciding between 2nd gen Ryzen (2700) or wait for 4600 and see how it performs.

Thinking about using it with GTX1080.

- 4th gen in laptops = 3rd gen on desktops

- if you want to wait for Zen3 (4th gen on desktop) then it should come out close to the end of this year

- If you have for example a PCIe 3.0 graphics card that uses 16 lanes, it will still use all of the 16 lanes when plugged into PCIe 4.0 slot because that slot has to run at 3.0 speeds for compatibility reasons. It will use all of the 16 lanes, not just half. The device also needs to support 4.0 if you want to use only half of the lanes for the same bandwidth.

- It will remain 16 lanes, just the amount of bandwidth per lane changes

- B450 is perfectly fine for R5 3600

- not really

- it will be fine, you can always OC later if needed

It's usually described as the sweet spot for Ryzen 3000 series chips. If you get RAM rated for 3600Mhz then you're going to get that, you could overclock the 3000Mhz RAM but it's not a guarantee you'll be able to hit that mark. The difference wouldn't be too much but it's a bit of a performance bump I think.

The 4600 desktop wont be out till close to end of the year.
