When I plug my adapter in the front of the PC it downloads at 1mbps+

When I plug straight into motherboard its down to 20kbps

Your thoughts ?

EM interference is worse behind the computer maybe? Unless its because its a usb 2.0/usb 3.0 difference? Were the ports blue or have SS stamped next to the port?

I'm an IT System Admin with 15+ years worth of XP, plus I've been tinkering computers since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver, so I usually know what I'm talking about.

What adaptor? Plug in where and to what?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Reception is higher when in back of PC though .. And in properties it says download speed is 30 - 50mbps+

USB slots and adapter is 2.0

there might be obstructions to your signals receiving from the backplate. just a thought but the IO shield might have something to do with it, but the big thing I can take from this is the USB Ports are different, such as one is 3.0 the other is 2.0. Other than that it might just be bad signals because of walls and stuff.

Well, in that case I feel like plugging it in the back gives more strength because it's "directly" into the motherboard. As in I'm thinking that the USB Ports int he front are just connected to the header on the motherboard itself.

Sometimes Windows isn't accurate about the signal strength and speed. I had a similar issue with my wifi card where the Windows shows full strength and good speeds in properties, however the speeds were utter garbage. Turned out to be the antenna position which was causing the issue.

Insufficiently descriptive it seems.  “Adaptor” that produces data flow could be of several types.  Wired or wireless would be only one.  As far as “to where” directly into the motherboard could mean several types of ports possibly involving other adaptors.  It was mostly an attempt to further define things.

They had to make assumptions and guesses about how you were doing it to do that though. It could have refined things a bit.  Assumptions seemed to be it must be a USB wireless adaptor.  If it isn’t though there could be something missed.  You don’t want to talk about the hardware it’s your business.  I’m just trying to be helpful.

well i think assumptions were correct because it was pretty straight forward

i dont know any other kinds of wifi adapters besides usb so perhaps ignorance caused impatience

Could have been ethernet.  So an an adaptor but not a wireless one.  Could have been an issue specific to a type of usb connection within a given model of adaptor.  Could have been an issue with the particular connector used on a particular motherboard.  There are several types of usb and several types of connectors and several types of connectors on motherboards.  Some motherboards have USB type A ports that aren’t part of the backplate but on the PCB proper and are often used for things like bios flashing.  Kind of low probability stuff.  The high probability stuff was already covered.  It was a “ sweep the corners” act.

There are many PCI_e Wi-Fi cards on the market and from my own experience and hearing from others they're generally better/more reliable than USB.
