I got a deal on a rm 850w unit (the older one not the new one) and after installing it in my system I found the off on switch on it only half switches. Like its stuck on (better then off i guess)

The unit works fine other than that I just have to turn it off at the wall to turn the psu off.

Is there any particular bad effect or down side to this? or is pulling the cable good enough (might save me reaching past my desk)

Normally you wouldn't need to turn off the system via the switch and can just leave it on constantly so it's essentially in standby to turn on. Only concern I personally would have is if that switch welded itself close constantly as that could point to a bigger fault at hand.

I'm not sure if I would personally feel comfortable with this. There is a high chance of this being a fault. Have you attempted to contact corsair on this, I am willing to bet that they may do a courtesy replacement on this if you ask. Personally this is what I would do, although as others say it might be fine. But I wouldnt risk my hardware on this....

If you're handy with a soldering iron, you could just open the psu and replace the button yourself, it's not rocket science.

Plenty of switches at distributors of electronic components, here's an example list: https://www.digikey.com/short/zq09t2

Just open the psu and measure the dimensions then pick one that matches the hole in the case and solder the wires to the switch.
