This is my setup up first of all - AMD Ryzen 7 2700x - ROG STRIX B350-F Gaming - 2x8GB 288-Pin DDR4 3000 G.Skill Ripjaws V Series - ThermalTake Toughpower 850W - Geforce GTX 1080 8G.

 

And right now I am just curious if there is anyway I can go about testing my 1080 for it's current performance. I bought it within the first month of it's launch, so it's 3-4 years old? It is currently the oldest piece of hardware in my system, outside of the case and power supply. I just feel like the type of games i'm playing are not up to par with what this graphics card should be putting out. And I always play on lower settings, since I don't care about visuals, I only want max fps.

You can try it out in a program like 3DMark (the free demo on Steam will work fine) and see if the scores you are getting in the graphics part are up to par with what others are getting with that videocard.

Run benchmarks and compare against others or if you have results from tests done when you first bought it?

Seems like you are getting a lower score than most people using this hardware. This is the lowest score I found with a GTX 1080 and R7 2700x:

Just downloaded the program. How do I go about running a benchmark? Never used this before.

HWInfo64 is a program to keep an eye on the temperatures and clock speeds of your CPU and GPU.

Click on 'Sensors' in the top left of the program, scroll down until you find the temperature section of your CPU (that was about halfway through the page for me), right click, show graph.

Scroll down some more until you find your videocard temps (about 4/5ths down the page) and do the same.

Maybe open the graphs for GPU Clock (couple columns under the videocard temp section) too.

These graphs should show some info on how your system is running.

 

What is your memory running at, by the way? Go to Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) > Performance > Choose RAM on the left side > See 'Speed' on the bottom right. It should say 1465Mhz or higher for you.

Here is the graph of my GPU temp. Never went above 64 C. Didn't check clocks, can do if needed.

Play a game and watch the gpu usage. 
Card it prolly running fine and the same as it did when it came out.

Can you run the CPU benchmark Cinebench R15 and check what your score is?

Should be between 1500 and 1600.

First run it without HWInfo64 or any other programs running, then try to run it with HWInfo64 open, to see what CPU temps were like.

Out of curiosity, did you have many background programs open, while running the 3DMark test?

GTX 1080s very in performance. 

If you bought a non factory overclocked version your score is about right. If you bought an factory overclocked version your score is low.

 

Published TimeSpy scores are usually overclocked to the max so comparing a 24/7 setup is not practical in my view. 

 

Here is the score of my stock EVGA 1080 SC. It uses a i7 6700k so the CPU score is lower.  The EVGA factory overclock on the card leaves not headroom for manual overclocking.

I usually test GPUs with Heaven bench since it uses only 1 CPU core and it loops in a window.

This is what it looks like.

Since the R 2700x has about the same single core strength as a stock i7 6700k you should be close to this score.

Judging how it’s running at stock speeds I’d assume it could be a reference board with a fancy bios. Just heat bringing it down.

First run it without HWInfo64 or any other programs running, then try to run it with HWInfo64 open, to see what CPU temps were like.

Out of curiosity, did you have many background programs open, while running the 3DMark test?

When I did the 3DMark tests yesterday I did not have any programs running, made sure to close them all. And here are my Cinebench results.

It possibly could get warmer but the test finished before it plateaued. I did a test with and without HWiNFO running, but the test was a 10cb difference.

Damn... so i'm just gonna be looking for a GPU upgrade next. Thanks for everything. I wished there was something wrong so it could be fixed. But I guess i'll have to live with it for now.

You could always try your hand at videocard overclocking. Just seeing all the information here, everything seems normal. Nothing out of the line really.

I'm always scared to overclock, even though everyone says if you go super slow and everything and make sure temps are within reason you should be ok. I would just to hate to brick my card then be SOL for a long time, since it takes me forever to get disposable income for my PC.

 

I would love to get more performance out of it though, so I guess i'll have to figure something out.
