Pc wont boot when i connect a drive or gpu to it

Djcoldcrown

So im building my first pc in school and the specs are

case- a box

motherboard - idk the name but its made by HP

cpu - AMD Phenom 2 X4

planned gpu - nVidia geforce 310

ram - 12 gigs of ddr3@1600mhz

Planned drives - wd blue 500 gb,seagate baracuda 500gb

so it wouldn't boot (no signs of life at all) and my computer teacher thought maybe if we took the gpu out it would boot and it did we got exited and got our first drive plugged in so we could install linux mint but it wouldn’t boot when we had the drive nor the gpu in

what are we doing wrong?

Do the CPU/motherboard even still work? Anything from Phenom era is old, so something could very well be dead.
