how do i know if i should use a 3 slot or a 4 slot Nv-link

Please provide more details such as what graphics cards you are talking about. What is the situation you want touse NVLink in. 

 

Also. I've never heard of 3- and 4 way NVLink. As far as I know you can only have NVLink between 2 GPUs.

It is often 3 slot nowadays but this is not guaranteed.

 

Most mobos have enough space that you can mount 2 beefy cards, and said cards end up being over 2 slots wide (2.5 to even 3 slot overall width).  The second GPU tends to be 3 slots away.  

 

All that said, check with your mobo, even count the spaces if you have it in your case (each removable cutout in the case represents 1 slot, you can count how many it is away using these and see which ones the GPU's line up with and count the differenct

 

Def want to get it right as its an 80 dollar part!
