R5 3600 Build

Its been a long time since I have built a gaming system. A lot has changed. My last system was a 1055T with a 480 and an 8800 for physx. I would be doing what I consider some light gaming, maybe some fort, wow possibly again, some of the major FPS titles but nothing for lengthy extended periods of time like I used to. Fold on the side again. Monitor I am still on the fence about as I like budget but still want a decent monitor for under 250 or even less if such a thing is possible, widescreen with 1ms.

 

There is just soo much to learn. I made sure to source samsung b die mem dims with decent latency especially with this new fangled infinity fabric!?! Man have things changed.

I know drivers are still a bit of an issue, but maybe a current gen AMD gpu instead of the 580.  That would be my only criticism.

good pick on the low latency ram, but for X570 motherboards, avoid MSI (except the ultra high end). You can also save on the power supply, 650 watts is overkill for most systems. You can just about squeeze a 1660 super in your budget

this is a much better optimised build, paying $155 for a 16gb kit is way too much.

Unless you need PCIe 4.0, you could save a pretty penny by getting a b450 or x470 board, albeit with the possibility of needing to flash your BIOS to get up and running.

You could then use that money toward an upgraded GPU if you wanted. A 580 is a great 1080p card, but you could potentially step up to 1440p with a few tweaks here and there such as 550 watt PSU (as Fasauceome mentioned) and 3200mhz RAM.

Doesn't Ryzen preform better with lower latency and timings? I thought the frequencies were tied with the infinity fabric and the samsung b dies were better at achieving such a solution. Or is the difference between the modules really not as drastic as I am making it out in my head?

difference is within 1 or 2% when you compare a 3600C15 vs 3600C16 kit, it is totally not worth literally double the price.

Dont think the rx 580 is affected at all. 

 

Its RDNA that has those driver issues, not GCN.

I was debating between an x470, the prime x470pro and a 570 variant. The asus board is 40~ cheaper. For some reason I have in my head that I want 2 m.2 slots but for the life of me cannot see actually using both. The m.2 would be OS and two 2T barracuda in raid for storage so the prime might not be as bad as I make it out in my head.

my list at the same price has an RTX 2060 KO in it, which is much much better than an RX 580.

Looking at the PSU. I chose the 650 basically for the full modular. A 550 full modular is basically the same price. The 650 would give me a bit of overhead for a better card yeah?

Is there a large difference these days in a card with 4gb vs 8gb ram? In my dinosaur days, a phyx card actually helped.

depends on the games you play. but the RX 580 vs RTX 2060 KO is a different story as they are in 2 completely different categories. the RX580 is an entry level card with the RTX 2060 KO being a mid range card.

I am also debating an aftermarket cooler. I had a silver arrow on my previous build and was able to get 4.0 stable on my 1055t on air. Been looking at the Noctua NH-D15 black so I am wondering if the 1660 super would be a better option for me budget wise over the 2060 and still get decent performance.

x470 is kind of a waste of money, you can easily push nice OCs on a b450 board which will save you money, with no loss in performance. stock cooler that comes with the 3600 is decent, and is good enough for mild OCs. remember modern chips don't produce as much heat anymore. Downgrading from a 2060 to a 1660 super is a large drop in performance so no that will not be a good option.
