Difference in Minecraft versions?

I see there are different versions of Minecraft for pc. I want to get it for my son who’s 9 but I don’t want to get a version that’s worse if that makes sense. 
 

It will be played on the pc in my signature. I’ve seen the difference with the shader mods and he’s only played on console so I want to surprise him with a better looking Minecraft. 
 

I don’t know all the differences in the version and would appreciate it if any people that play could help me out with this. Thanks in advance

The Java version is less restricted when it comes to modding. That's probably your best bet

Does the java version have controller support? I have a Xbox one wireless controller with the Bluetooth adapter that I use for my controller games.

I don't believe so, no.

 

Besides, minecraft with a controller is far worse than with a mouse and keyboard

Weighing out your options, java editing has more features, better mods, and the ability to try upcoming features first. The downside is you have less options for multiplayer.

Windows 10 edition also known as bedrock has the ability to  play with other people very easily and even cross platform. So someone playing  on a phone can play with someone on a computer who's also playing with people on xbox 1. The downside of windows 10 is you give up the early access and mod features.
