I have a Asus Sabertooth Z77 motherboard  with a I5-2500k and 8gb of ddr3 ram i have plugged in the 20+4 pin power and 8pin cpu the power led on the motherboard lights up but when i roll over the pins with a screw driver nothing happens any advice?A refund would be my last option testing on a cardboard motherboard box

You sure that you tried to short right pins for power switch ? Check the pic1 for right ones. Also you can trie clearing cmos if you didn’t do it before. 
Do you have speaker connected to the mobo? Is there any beeps? 
Last you can try with memory button (pic2)
