Weird Internet Issue

ArcticSalad

I've been experiencing a strange internet problem over the last couple of months, and as of late it has gotten especially bad. At random times throughout the day, my internet speeds will drop so low that I immediately lose connection to whatever I'm doing, whether it be gaming, in a discord call, streaming a movie, etc. My internet connection has never dropped entirely. The internet tends to "go out" for around 2-5 minutes, and this happens at least 10 times a day.

I'm running on a wired Ethernet connection straight from my router to my PC. My internet package is 600 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, and I'm getting this no problem 24/7, except for when this anomaly occurs.

Several dozen times now, I've run a speedtest while this occurs and it's reporting my download at only ~10-15 Mbps and upload less then 10 Mbps. Here's where things get extra weird though. I tried running a speedtest while this occurs on another wired Ethernet PC simultaneously, and the speeds reported on there were exactly what I'm paying for (600 up, 20 down) while my own PC still reports those very low numbers.

I've hit a bit of a dead end here on what could be causing it. I have contacted my ISP a couple of times now, with no luck in finding a solution. They have finally suggested sending somebody out here to take a look in about a week, but I'm still not entirely sure whether it's a problem on their end or my end. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

EDIT: I've also tried switching to Wifi, same issue occurs.

If you've ran a test on the network with two different computers at the time the issue occurred and only your computer experienced the problem then chances are it's an issue originating from your PC. This is something your ISP can't (or rather won't) help.

You can start by re-installing or updating your network driver. Beyond that you can try installing a different NIC and see if it makes a difference. If both fail try booting a different OS such as a fresh Windows installation on another drive or Ubuntu. See if the error goes away or persists. Beyond that you may find yourself reinstalling Windows or replacing hardware.

Do you have any software installed that monitors your internet traffic?  Something from ASRock or maybe even an anti-virus?

I don't, and the only anti-virus I'm running is Windows defender.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I don't have any spare drives laying around to boot from, so that might be out of the question. I tried reinstalling my drivers - I'll wait to see if that made a difference. If nothing else comes up I'll probably try reinstalling Windows, it's about time I do anyway.

Other factor for the PC getting the slow/weird speeds is your cable from PC to router. If this is a stationary PC it would be less likely as the cable doesn't move so I doubt it would be so random but if you ever move the tower or its a laptop then a bent cable or stressed connector may cause some weird nonsense like this. If you have a spare I would replace it as a "just in case" anyways.

I don't believe this is the issue as I have tried switching to Wifi and the exact same problem still occurs. Thanks though!
