Hello LTT Community!

I am planning on upgrading my current system to be able to have a decent 1080p gaming experience in the latest/newest games.

Since my rig is based on the 1150 socket from which upgrading would mean to spend a lot of money, a GPU upgrade comes to my mind.

Here are my current specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790k

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming

RAM: G.Skill TridentX 16 GB 2400 Mhz

MB: MSI Z97 Gaming 7

Which GPU would you suggest before running into a CPU bottleneck? I am also familiar with CPU overclocking if helpful.

Thanks in advance

I can give you a snapshot.  I’ve got a 4770k which is a bit slower than yours.  Memory is also slower though I got 16gb.  and I’ve tried a couple gpus on it.  A 580 I can bury no problem. A 5700xt I could not bury.  I got it spinning good and loud though.  I also couldn’t bury a 1080ti founders.

im currently sitting on a 580 because my 970 died.  My plan is to put up with 1080p gaming until navi21/amphere come out.  They’re being teased at the moment.  The big worry is that the upcoming consoles have unknown quality GPUs on them.  Estimates are between 580 and 2070s not including raytracing.

My suspicion is my cpu won’t cut it either and I’m going to have to build a whole new rig.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
