I purchased the AX8 earlier this week and ended up returning it because it was worse than my old Netgear Orbi AC2200. I ended up upgrading to the new Orbi AC 3000 and it is fantastic. I know it wasn’t something you were looking at, but unless you have a specific need for WiFi 6 it’s not worth it right now. I have a 2 story house for reference.

If your old router is dead...I'd just shop for a descent one to replace it like a Netgear Nighthawk AC2600...it won't break the bank.  Unless you have internet speeds greater than 2Gbs it's not worth buying an expensive model.

Naa i dont have a very fast internet  definatly no Gbs speed but the R8500 that i have now doesnt work properly anymore espacially with wifi 2.4 ghz ...one other reason is they are on sale around 250 ..zo i think it was a good deal ...but i see ur points  maybe is worth waiting

Do you have lots of device that are ax compatible and have the demand for low latency simultaneous Connection. The biggest advantage ax over ac is upload “mu-mimo”, as well as OFDMA .

speaking of asus vs netgear; Nergear is notorious in firmware.

Gamingwise, the terrible netgear firmware frequently result in transient high latency;(while playing call of duty MW , my ping will randomly jump beyond 200ms ).

FYI the upgrade from ac to ax does not make any changes to your wire Connectivity. The only advantage of Ax88u over ac88u is the better cpu and bigger ram.

If there is really good deal (ax88u) go for it.

However if you will have the demand for 10Gbe Lan connection in the future (Such as a highspeed nas for multiple 4K streams or local upload), check out ax89x. It has two 10Gbe port, one sfp+ and one base-t.

BTW even though the ax89x is not yet release in North America, base on the pricing in local Taiwan market, it is 78% more expensive than ax88u. However take a look at its specs....
