Hey everyone, I'm kinda new to AMD world and recently got the following build:

  • Aorus B450 Elite
  • Ryzen 7 3700x (Stock cooler - Wraith Prism)
  • 2x8 G.Skill @ 3200mhz
  • TUF Gaming RTX 2060 6gb (TUF-RTX2060-O6G-GAMING)
  • EVGA B3 750W 80 Plus Bronze Modular
  • 1x 480GB M.2 WD GREEN + 1x 1TB Samsung SSD
  • 2 monitor (1x OMEN 25" Free-Sync 144hz, 1x HP 24x Free-Sync/G-Sync 144hz)

From my perspective this is a very strong build but I'm having trouble in getting RDR 2 maxed out. I've seen some videos out there where people can get RDR 2 maxed from a 5600 XT with new BIOS and the comparison charts shows the same for RTX 2060. I'm struggling to run even on recommended settings, I have to go down 1 step on that slider to get something above 60fps

Am I doing anything wrong?

Is it only red dead or have you had issues elsewhere?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

rdr2 is not well optimised. i think what you're getting from the 2060 is what is expected. you can try a slight overclock on the gpu in afterburner, you might get 5 fps more or so.

I really don't know what to tell you other than RDR2 is just weird with hardware it seems, or in other words, it's just very demanding. Everything looks normal with your CPU/GPU usages/frequencies. Hardware Unboxed's optimisation guides were actually fairly helpful for me, I managed to get some extra frames while still maintaining visuals, you can check them out here (regular settings) and here (advanced settings).

What type of drive do you have ?  You left that out.  Might be an IOPS thing...

On the chart the RTX2060 on maxed can get 57 avg, i can nearly go above 40 when maxed xD

I'll take a look into that, but with my build I was not expecting to have to tweak games so deep like that

that chart isn't really maxed. it's ultra textures, but very high the rest. with everything maxed, they get 45. and that's with a 9900k. with your 3700x, 40 is what i'd expect.

Can you just for giggles install the game on the m.2...and give it a whirl ?

Do you think just moving it from one drive to another would affect anything or is it better to install again? I've run one of those full benchmarks recently and both disks are performing well

I'd re-install it...not move it.  It might be the IOPS of the m.2 will make a difference.  I know in DayZ, another crazy large open world game, the IOPS from an m.2 make for VERY smooth game play...might help with RDR2 as well...certainly wouldn't hurt anything.

I'll give it a try

moving it to the m.2, as @Stu_Bear suggest, will likely help with 1% lows and micro-stutters (if you're getting any), offering a smoother gameplay. but the average fps is dictated by the gpu, and i've shown you above what you've got. i think the best option for you is to follow @Mateyyy's guide on how to optimize the settings.

Personally I think it's more beneficial to install the OS and apps on a sata SSD and all my games on the m.2 SSD.  Not that many games benefit from m.2 today, but that will change starting 2021...that has to do with the fact both new consoles will have NVMe drives...and game developers are writing code as I type this message to utilize m.2 speeds.  Current 3rd gen NVMe has the same transfer speeds as old DDR 400 ram...anybody remember that stuff?  So in effect anyone sporting a m.2 NVMe drive of say 1TB...is sporting 1TB of DDR 400 ram...which is sweet.

Neither did 2080Ti owners when they noticed that they only get ~80FPS on Ultra 1080p lol. Your PC specs are far from bad or subpar, it's just that this particular game runs poorly on all current-gen hardware.

I use the Hardware Unboxed settings and get:

54fps average at 4k

109fps average at 1440p

72fps average at 3840 X 1600

with a 2080 ti.

These settings saved me hours of testing and the results are great.
