Cost and productivity wise the gaming laptop is better. 

 

Gaming wise the egpu is better. Like @Wolfycapt said, egpu would be impossible under $1300 .

 

A gaming laptop under 1300 would definitely be possible.

Nitro 5 is also optionable. if you want cheaper the FX505 i option althought the cooling and Display were not as good as nitro 5. around 600-700$ ish. and for the eGPU it will be bottlenecked since it was transferring back and forth between cpu > egpu > display. if you use external display then it would be lot lot faster machine. also the BOX itself cost a lot.
