The "Record Player" PC

What's up,

The backstory of this build is my sister impulse bought a phonograph from a Barnes and Noble, and it was really shitty and apparently the brand has a reputation for breaking records. She's gotten a new player and doesn't need this any more, so she gave it to me to mess around with.

 

I've just upgraded pretty much my whole desktop from a i7 3770 to a R5 1600 (AF), and despite the record player sucking, the box looks pretty cool so I want to see if I can build a PC into it, maybe include a monitor in the top too.

It's going to take some serious modification, you could fit the desktop in it for sure, but monitor too? More than likely not.

Eh, I'm not opposed to pulling apart one of my old monitors to use for this, and put it in like a laptop screen.

 

Then again, this could also be a bit easier if I don't try to make it like a laptop and instead just a portable pc

id get a laptop screen with adapter to hdmi. much smaler formfactor and you could probably power it over usb(?)

This thing was insanely easy to pull apart, just 6 screws and the whole thing came out in one piece. There's also already the start of a hole I can use for rear IO

So today I brought it to school to work on it, I found out where I'm mounting the power supply (and had to pull it out of its case because it was too big) and figured out how to mount this cooler

coming along pretty nice! I like the idea of having such a portable PC. is there enough space to mount a monitor panel with the power supply there? If not maybe it could stick out a bit and have the bottom indented slightly?

I wanted to include a screen, but it's already gonna be a real tight squeeze to get the GPU in so I think I won't.

better idea, take the record player apart and use it for the top of the case. the play button can be power and see if you can hook up the platter to spin while it's on

Alright update, I spent a couple hours putting all the standoffs in and mounting the PSU and motherboard, then I cut a larger hole for rear IO (it isn't pretty lol I used a jigsaw). I installed the components and it boots and can run Minecraft! I don't have a riser cable yet so that'll be what's coming next, I think I've found a spot for it right next to the CPU cooler. I've also gotta find a nice place to put a power button, because shorting the mobo pins every time isn't really a long term solution

Ah good ol crosley cruiser record player, vinyl elitists love tricking people into thinking they destroy records when really the tracking force is acceptable and the stylus is easily upgradeable to diamond. But anyway, this seems cool I love suitcase style builds. You should try to make some front I/O in place of the speaker grills on the front.

Update so idk how but I fried the mobo (it was a pretty beat up one any way), so it'll be maybe a few weeks until I can afford a new mATX or ITX B75 mobo, I'll probably find one off ebay or something

lmao so that motherboard just sat in my closet for like a month and today I pulled it out and was trying to fix it... I noticed a tiny metal blob sitting on the motherboard so I flicked it off onto the floor and the damn thing POSTed. So this whole time the mobo worked fine, it was just shorted in one place, constantly activating the power supplies over current protection.

 

Sure glad I never got around to ordering a new board lol

So I got my cheap PCIE risers yesterday and they work totally fine, despite looking like some obsolete IDE cables that have been given a new lease on life. I found out where to put the graphics card and cut some holes. I would have used a CNC to just drill all the holes perfectly, but I can't go to school for the next couple weeks due to human malware. The only thing now to do is get everything back in the box and find a way to stabilize the graphics card better. I also need to get a USB wifi adapter so I can have internet access on it

I'm not going to lie, that's a neat idea, though I'd probably build a new case if I were to attempt, simply to fit the monitor inside. And watercooling, because watercooling.
