Hi,

So about half a year ago, my GTX 1060 died all of the sudden with some smoke and a weird smell coming from it. No output, the fans wouldn't work, it was dead. How it happened was I updated my drivers, the performance was about 30% worse. I spent like a month troubleshooting and talking to NVIDIA Support with no luck. Eventually I took it to repair and explained my issue and obviously they said there was nothing wrong with it. The next day it died. I got my money back which I spent getting a GTX 1660 Ti.

My new 1660 Ti is not even 3 months old (I think lol I have a bad sense of time) and it's doing the same thing. There was also a weird, burnt plastic like smell in my room a few weeks or a month ago. I updated my drivers yesterday and I'm getting about 50% worse performance. Let's take BeamNG.drive for example. I used to get about 100-140 FPS on there but now I can't even get 60. The exact behaviour like my last card. I've already accepted the fact that it's going to die in a month or so but I just wanted to get your people's opinion on what could be causing the issue. I was told a while ago I have a pretty shitty PSU and I suspect that's the problem. The temps and everything are fine, I've checked.

Thanks.

I'm not sure lol. All I know is that it's Corsair VS 650 ATX PSU. Where can I check?

Ah. I was thinking of buying a Corsair TX-M Series 750W 80 Plus Gold.

You'd be good with even just a 550W unit. The TXM is a good choice, but also check if there are any good deals for RMx units (also from Corsair) or Straight Power 11s from be quiet. Again, 550W will be more than enough, go for 650W if you really just want some extra headroom for future upgrades.

Also (non-related), considering buying a second memory stick, as it can significantly improve performance, as running memory in single-channel cuts your bandwidth in half, and 16GB has pretty much become the standard nowadays for gaming PCs. 8GB should be pretty cheap these days anyway.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

The only thing that could be damaging your GPU is bad power coming from the PSU, unless you have coolant dripping on your GPU from your water cooler if you have one.

Also since it seems that the nature of your problem is electrical i recommend buying a UPS that would filter and smooth power coming from your wall socket.

Also if you are using a power strip don't plug any weird stuff along side your computer like your xmas tree or a vacuum cleaner lol only plug in computer peripherals.

Yeah but

UPS-> Bad PSU won’t help

the UPS might clean up to power from the wall but then the PSU will recrapify it

This is likely to have nothing to do with the PSU, you would get consistent driver crashes and BSOD's if power is messing up, most here have no clue what they are talking about.

A card will not lose FPS, just stop working.

Its not constructive criticism since you are NOT offering a solution. Saying that everybody is clueless is not much help. I am sure you can do better

So your solution is buy a PSU when it may not be the issue?

Let us just consider if this still happens with a new and "better" PSU, how will you feel?

Your "solution" or doing NOTHING doesn't help either. Problems are fixed by trial and error. You can not sit around doing nothing praying that the issue with go away on its own lol.

If the new PSU doesn't help then we think of something else. This is how troubleshooting works, you have a list of things that could be wrong you try to fix them one by one and stick with the solution that works best.

Something is better than nothing. If you know what the problem is WITHOUT troubleshooting thru some magical conjuring please enlighten us mere mortals.

Chill out bros!

@F77 about the drivers you could be right, but crappy power can produce BSODs in some instances.
