New Video Camera

I am looking for a new video camera for a youtube channel. I would like it to be 1080p and have the expandibility for a better mic and such. I would like it to be less than $500, but could potentially go up to $700 if it worth the extra money. I would also like it to be able to go on a tripod.

This: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Compact-Systems-3-0-Inch-EF-M18-55mm/dp/B00A2BVCO0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392172680&sr=8-1&keywords=canon+eos+m I got this last year and have no complaints considering the price of it. For reference, it is basically the same camera as the 60d ($1000) smaller and slightly slower. The video quality is better than anything you will ever get out of a camcorder and you have the option to use more lenses. The only reason it is this cheap is because on release the autofocus was as accurate as a slingshot made of toothpaste. Regardless they fixed that and as long as you use the lens included then the autofocus is silent and superb

My System Specs: (Short list) i7 4770k, GTX 780, many SSD's, a 2 TB HDD(deceased :( ), Corsair 650D. Full list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kchriz6097/saved/8dh7YJ

Upgrade Plan: Acquire some Black Noctuas then add 16 or 32GB of 2133MHz memory

Yes, its a dslr minus the slr :P but yea anything a dslr can do this will do as well. It has mic in, audio monitoring and video out.

Do you know if this is any good? http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6-NIKKOR/dp/B007VGGFZU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1392173718&sr=1-1&keywords=D3200

I would also want to take high quality pictures as well. Also. Do you know of any mics that can attach to that type/brand of cameras?

I haven't heard anything bad about that camera but then again I usually go with cannon for video usage since they accel in that aspect. As for microphones you can attach any 3.5mm microphone like this to the shoe mount on the top. This one is fairly inexpensive and gives much better audio than any onboard solution, plus it requires no batteries http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-PRO24CM-Stereo-Microphone-Camera/dp/B0016ARZ9C/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1392174088&sr=8-6&keywords=audio+technica+shotgun+mic

It's class was $1000, aaaaand its $350 so with that said this camera is THE best video camera for the price regardless of what photographer enthusiast hits on it with

That's not exactly the right way to look at it. It was $1,000 and now in order to sell them they had to drop the price to $350. Kind of says something about the product doesn't it?

The T3i would definitely be a better choice, plus you have access to way more lenses and accessories.

I don't know much about the mic, my friend who does a fair bit of video has a Rhode mic, and I've heard great things about the desk based Blue Yeti. Completely depends on how you want your set up to be.

Magic Lantern gives you a bunch of added adjust ability to the cameras settings as well. It's free open source firmware.

Thats not to mention there aren't any reviews out there that have any publicity from anytime soon... like I said there are few issues considering the price drop and makes for a nice compact video camera.

Do you know why that is? It's an old camera.

CNET

The good: With a very nice touch screen, a well-designed body, and excellent photo quality, the Canon EOS M has some attractive qualities.

The bad: Seriously poor autofocus performance and battery life detract from the overall package.

The bottom line: While it provides one of the best touch-screen experiences in its class and the compact body is quite comfortable to shoot with, the Canon EOS M's disappointing performance and blah feature set make it less attractive than competitors.

PCMag

  • Pros

Sharp images. Good high ISO performance. Compact body. Responsive touch screen. 1080p video recording.

  • Cons Very slow to start. Lethargic autofocus. No flash. No EVF option. Limited native lens library.

  • Bottom Line The EOS M, Canon's first compact interchangeable lens camera, feels polished on the outside, but its poor performance makes it clear that you're looking at a first-generation product.

DigitalRev did a video review too, they found the same issues.

With a DSLR you get a huge selection of lenses, which alone makes it a better investment.

These type of cameras are good if you want a camera that's small, and takes better quality pictures than a point and shoot. Which they do nicely (though this one has issues with movement).

The Canon T3i is $499 right now on Amazon.  From what I've read that would be a good buy for you.  I've been looking for a camera for video work for a few months now and If I didn't already own a few Nikon lens I probably would have already bought the T3i.
