So, I am currently using a WD Elements 4 TB External Drive. I plan to switch that to a SATA drive as it feels inefficient, now that I have a desktop setup. However, I don’t want to buy a 4TB SSD as it is a bit expensive. But I have a lot of stuff currently routed to G: Elements. Is it possible to buy an SSD and an HDD, put both under the directory G: Elements, and be able to choose which drive I’m copying the files to? I don’t think striped volume let’s me choose.

No, you can't do that.

Aside from that, if you're going to choose anyway, why not simply just map the SSD and HDD to separate letters? It's no different, ultimately, from you using the same letter and choosing the different drives anyway.

Technically yes but not exactly in the way you are thinking. Buy a good HDD and a smaller SSD 256GB or less. Setup the SSD as a level 2 cache with a program like Primocache and you can access your most frequently access data at SSD speeds from the same directory. Hope this helps.

You could also make a symbolic link on the primary data drive that points to a location on the SSD. I did this with my two non-OS drives. I decided my HDD would be the primary and it has a symbolic link to the SSD where I have my apps.

*wants to just remove the HD from the xternal bay and slap it into external sata*. * also thinks it’s probably a bad idea*

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Yeah I'm probably going to end up doing that but I do not want to have the extra hassle of re-routing the files in my old projects to their new locations. Thanks for your answer!

I'll look into this! Thanks :)
