AMD R9 290 - Fps problem

Go to solution Solved by Dnoble24,

Seems to be a combination of the CPU, BF4, and the new AMD drivers.

Hey LTT forum :)

I recently got a new computer with an AMD r9 290 and an i5 4430.

When i compare my fps to benchmarks I see on Youtube (

) and other sites I get very different numbers.

In bf4 i get around 40-60 fps on ultra settings and in Far Cry 3 with ultra i get like 50 fps and sometimes 30 and I dont know why :(.

I have the latest 14.1 drivers and i only have Skype and Chrome and a few other not very heavy programs running in the background.

My 290 is about 80-90 degrees when I'm playing and the cpu is around 40 degrees (its watercooled)

What can I do? :(

I5 4430 (Antec h2o 920), Amd r9 290, 250 gb ssd

I personally wouldn't call that a sidegrade.

In everything but BF4/Mantle stuff that is a sidegrade. Maybe a slight upgrade when you factor in the openCL performance boost though

Well mantle gives a hefty performance boost. And otherwise it is pretty much neck and neck to the 780.

But If you already have 780 it's just throwing away money

Nice that you have your CPU watercooled, but it's just an i5 4430.

Battlefield 4 is from what I've seen, a heavily CPU intensive game, so you might have a CPU bottleneck there. But I know it's not easy to just go and buy another CPU, for when you will get a new one, I'd suggest an i5 4670K for the unlocked multiplier. If you will get the 4670K and overclock it (you have watercooling and the multiplier is unlocked) you will get better performance. But, until then, what I would suggest is going to your BF4 settings and setting them to Custom, and turn MSAA off. Personally, I don't see the difference, and it really improves performance.

I'm not going to write it again. I will do a TL;DR however.

TL;DR:

290X is the better long term investment because of it's extra VRAM and Mantle.

AMD GPUs are more consistent than Nvidia GPUs. And that means everything for the highest tier of GPUs for the reasons outlined in the above linked post (2nd paragraph).

I think and I hope that you have your resolution scale set to 100%.

If you didn't get any FPS increase by turning MSAA off, it's quite weird. Try reinstalling your drivers.

If that doesn't help, then it gets a little bit more tricky.

Most people use 1600MHz memory or RAM, don't know what you use, but I'd say you have 1600MHz memory. You have to go into the UEFI BIOS, and set the voltage and speed of the memory, to the voltage and speed that it's rated for. You can find these specs on the side of a memory stick. If you're not sure how to do that, check a video on the internet. Your memory might be set to less than what your RAM is rated for, usually it starts at 1333MHz, for safety, but if your RAM is rated for 1.65V and 1600MHz (example) then you want to get all the performance out of that memory! You might want to try this, because Battlefield 4 is also, a memory intensive game.

Because of the Hawaii GPU and the cooler of the R9 290 (you have a reference cooler R9 290, right?), another issue might be throttling. The card will basically slow itself down, to stay at the temperature target, which by default, is set at 95 degrees Celsius.

Another thing you could do, but I'm not sure about this, check the internet for more details, would be to go into the BIOS and disable some throttling settings in there and also, in Windows in an utility like MSI Afterburner, to set your fan speed high, but I know it'll be painful, that card gets soooo loud :(. This might affect temperatures a touch, but I've heard that it does improve performance.
