I am building a new pc, at least essentially a new one because I bought a 9900k not realizing I would need a bunch of other stuff, and have a question regarding my hard drive. On my old pc, I only have 1 2tb hard drive with everything on it. I am also bringing over my 1060(I know it will bottleneck, I’m planning on upgrading this year). Is it going to be as simple as me plugging in my old hard drive and I’m good to go? Thanks!

PS. Sorry if this is in the wrong sub I couldn’t decide where to put it.

First it might be better to return the 9900k for an i7 or R7 and use the money towards a better gpu. No you will need to reinstall windows to have the proper drivers installed. I would backup all the files you cant recover and then reformat your drive. Is this a ssd or hdd?

Kind of.

Assuming you're running windows: Windows does an *okay* job at replacing drivers for new hardware and removing old ones. That being said, it's not perfect and you should definitely reinstall windows when you get your new system. You can face blue screens and a bunch of other problems without doing so.

Should I just give in and go buy a https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-black-sn750-nvme-ssd-500gb-internal-pci-express-3-0-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-for-laptops/6338994.p?skuId=6338994

I really didn’t want to spend the extra money but it seems like that might be my best choice.

You don't have to but it would make things easier. That will work, you might be better off with a samsung m.2 as samsung supposedly has better speeds and better software.

An SSD is substantially better than a hard drive.

You don't need an NVMe drive, but most good, cheaper M.2 Drives tend to be NVMe.

You can get a 1TB M.2 SSD for around 120. The EX920 is a fair option in that department

I have heard good things about Samsung so I think I’m going to stick with the 500gb 970 evo. Is my old windows going to work?

Samsungs drives are very good, but they're wildly overpriced. If all you're looking for is something to work, the one I listed will do just fine. Or if it's cheap enough, an MX500 will do good as well.

Yes you can keep your windows, just attach it to your microsoft account on your current pc by going to your activation settings.

If you upgraded from windows 7 or 8, get the key for it and input it back in when you reinstall windows

When you install windows, you do it by creating a bootable USB and booting to it like you would a hard drive.

The software on the usb will give you the tools to install windows and alter drives.

Then when you're in your unactivated windows after it's installed, you sign into your ms account and transfer the license.

Okay so I need to plug in a USB to my current PC. And then download what to it?

After I do that, all I need to do is plug it into my new pc and boot, and it will take me through?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

When you boot, mash delete or F12 or F10 and get to a boot order page so it the motherboard will boot to the usb instead of your hard drive.

The W10 installation software (the usb) is extremely straight forward, and you shouldn't have any issues following the steps. It'll just ask you which drive you want to install it on and etc.

Make sure to back up your important files.

How are samsung drives wildly overpriced? It was a $9 difference between the one he listed and the samsung 970. They can be but recently they've been pretty cheap.

Thats fair, I'm living two months in the past I suppose

With that though- as much as I like how well those drives are made, they won't provide any benefits for a normal consumer unless they really need NVMe

Alright so I need to go buy the ssd, plug it into my new computer.

Then, install the windows setup on a flashdrive. (How big?)

Then boot the pc, install windows on the ssd.

Once windows is loaded up, plug in my old hard drive.

That's it?

Also, will I have the same settings(Taskbar, Nvidia, file paths) as I did before? Or am I going to have to set everything backup?

That's a bit annoying. Can I try to just plug in my hard drive and see what happens? I've read elsewhere that windows 10 is very forgiving and that plugging it into a brand new pc will just say "Installing Drivers" and stuff like that. It would make sense that it shouldn't be this difficult if I have everything preinstalled in the hard drive except for the drivers.

Sure you could I guess, but it doesn't work very well.

You're also buying a 9900k and using it on a system that doesn't even have solid state storage- which puts you behind. Like someone buying an F1 car who doesn't race

I'm not really phased about buying the ssd. I just don't feel like setting everything up again. Is there a way to move windows to the ssd once it's installed? I could boot with the hard drive and then move it over after.

You can clone it. It works decently majority of the time.

Only if the new drive is the same size or larger than the current drive though.

I have a system image of my current pc on my current 2tb hard drive. Will that do me any good? I've heard that I might be able to boot the ssd and then restore the system image.

You won't be able to using a windows image, you'll need some 3rd party software to create images.

Reinstalling is just the easiest solution.

Alright thanks for your help. I’m just going to get a 500gb 970 evo. Boot with the windows flashdrive. Install windows on the ssd. And then plug in my hard drive and move stuff over. Can I have my hard drive plugged in from the beginning?
