My friend recently got a ASUS VG248QE monitor and is struggling to get 144hz.

His laptop is a TUF Gaming FX505dt

The problem it that the output of the laptop is hdmi and the monitor only supports 60hz for hdmi. He has a DVI cable, and hdmi cable [not sure if 1.2 or 1.4]. I've looked around and noticed that the ASUS VG248QE model does not support hdmi above 60hz. Would an adapter work, for hdmi to DVI-D or hdmi to Displayport or would the monitor still be 60hz.

Anything helps, if there is an adapter that would work it would be great if you could post it.

No, mostly all the adapters cap the hertz too.

You can use a DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 adapter, but you need an active one.

An active HDMI to DP that supports the desired rates might work...

Club3D seems to have something that can do 1080p120.
