R9 3900X good upgrade from 5960X...?

I have now i7-5960X @ 4.2Ghz running for 5 years now, and I’m seeing 3rd gen Ryzen processors showing up.

R9 3900X seems to pack more cores for less price than I first purchased 5960X before.

 

Do you think 5960X is still powerful enough to keep going and there aren’t strong reason enough to jump ship to 3rd Ryzen?

Or R9 3900X is clearly the better CPU now? Or should I even wait for 3950X to actually be available again?

It’s not easy to decide since there are no direct game benchmark differences between them.

I know I have zero reason to upgrade from 1080Ti.

You’re gaming on a 5960x?  I personally would compare the thing to a 9900k with a mild overclock myself.  Which is to say, imho “no”. You’ll be fine for a long time I think.  Remember you’ve already paid for your machine.  

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

It would only be about a 50% improvement... at least you'd want a 3950X, that's be more like 80%...

But it's definitely questionable whether it makes sense at all. I tend not to upgrade CPU if it doesn't at least double, preferably closer to triples perfomance - aka at this point it means if I upgrade from my 5960X it'd be for a Threadripper 3960X at least. 

 

My 5-year old 5960X OCd to 4.4 all core is still fairing pretty well, pretty much on par with stock 9900K.

You'll get some savings on power usage with a newer CPU though if you care about that...

Alright. I decided to push the CPU from 4.2Ghz to 4.4Ghz instaed @ 1.396V... Stupid silicon lottery but oh well.

What all are you doing? 5960Xs still slap, depends on the workload whether the better single core of the 3900X would be super noticeable, or the extra cores it brings.

I was careful to get specifically a j-bin when I bought mine from eBay, it does 4.5Ghz at 1.2v. Really damn weird how different the j-bins seem to act compared to most other 5960Xs. 

time to sell yours and then buy one that's a j-bin since they aren't priced any higher

I'm doing little bit of everything. Gaming, VM, Sound Mixing, Video Editing, etc. More cores the better for VM for sure. I also checked my Geekbench 5  vs 9900K... still a far way to go. Imma try 4.5Ghz soon and there's no way I'm injecting this more than 1.4V... Do I wanna just drop the cash and go for Threadripper instead...? But gaming wise 3970X doesn't really perform better tho.

If you have the cash, dewit. Purely because TR 3000 reasons which are:

If you don't wanna drop the cash for that, the 3900X is an excellent option. Given you'll actually leverage the extra cores, it's better than the 5960X by a large margin unless you need the PCIe lanes (AFAIK it has 24, the 5960X has 40) and quad channel RAM (shouldn't unless those workloads are RAM bandwidth heavy?). Cooler too lol, my 5960X becomes a heatbox at much above 1.2v, I don't wanna know how hot they get at 1.4v (though I probably will find out soon lol, once I try to push for 5Ghz).

Even at 1.35V my 5960X is keep on returning CLOCK WATCHDOG TIMEOUT BSOD so many times. ;__; It boots fine at start, but it throws off when I put CPU in 100% state (Not Prim95 stress test, just light benchmarking programs like Geekbench 5 or some game benchmarks). I'll put my cash aside until when AMD makes any kind of announcements in CES next month. My take on next month is focusing more on mobile processors, but will see.

Update: I kept on getting additional BSDO, now it got worse at 4.3Ghz @ 1.401V... Yikes X.X

But it still beats i9-9900 in multicore score. Just not the K series and above. I see why this guy is still going strong..

Yeah, it's pretty crazy how long they've lasted. The 1680 v2 on X79 also performs similarly (Ivy Bridge E and clocks a bit higher on average), the Sandy Bridge E hexacores are insane too. X58 has finally fallen behind, but it had a damn good run. X79 and X99 still compete with stuff 4-5 years newer which is pretty nuts. Though they do have a harder time fighting Zen 2. 

Shame on the BSODs though, must've lost the silicon lottery pretty badly with that one. Though tbf I don't know the average OCs for 5960Xs that aren't j-bins, the j lads are the ones I looked into the most lol.

I was wondering myself the same question.

 

My 5960x is overclocked to stable 4.5Ghz, 1.168V on Asus X99 Deluxe Motherboard. BeQuiet! Dark Base 700 with 2x Noctua NF P14s Redux 140mm as intake fans. On 100% load it goes up to 81C but i usually remove front cover on the case when i am rendering stuff from C4D to keep it at about 72C.

I know it can go up to 5.0GHz with sufficient cooler but i am running DeepCool Captain 240mm atm.

 

I have this processor for more than 4 years and it still does whatever i throw at him pretty well (Cinebench R20 gives me 3960 score). Selling this current setup and getting AMD configuration seems like a good move and thats why i was checking what other people think about this.

 

It seems like i need to cash out about 3000 Eur for a better AMD setup that will not last more than 3 years. Am i wrong to conclude so?

The 5960x is definitely still fine for gaming.

Whoa, is it that you won the silicon lottery, or how much voltage are you pushing it to 5960X???

^^^ That seems like a j-bin most likely (or a golden chip from any other bin), and a good bit better than mine. Mine will do 4.5 at 1.2v, 4.7 at 1.3v, but caps at 4.8 allcore, 4.9 with HT off, can't get 5Ghz without going to unsafe voltages (aka much over 1.35v vCore/2.1v Input Voltage for daily).
