Hi Everyone,

Since we're in the mist of Holiday sells I was wondering if any of you can help me with recommendations or suggestions on what to upgrade on my current build. Below are the parts. I think i'm good with the GPU, Power Supply and Hard drives so I would want to get suggestions for Case, Ram, Motherboard and CPU (and it's cooler). I currently play games on a 1080p monitor (looking on getting 1440p in the future) and I also like playing strategy games that are CPU intensive. As for the budget, maybe an upgrade that costs no more than $500? Please let me know and thank you all for helping.

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
  • Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme4 LGA 1150
  • Case: Cooler Master Elite 430 - Mid Tower Computer Case with All-Black Interior and Windowed Side Panel
  • SSD 1: SAMSUNG 840 EVO  120GB
  • SSD 2: SAMSUNG 860 EVO  500GB
  • HDD: WD Blue 1TB Desktop Hard Disk Drive
  • GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 DirectX 12 GTX 1080 DUKE 8G OC 8GB
  • Power Supply: CORSAIR TX-M Series TX650M

just upgrade your cpu, which also needs a mobo and ram upgrade, everything else is fine.

if you're budget conscious go with the current king. the r5-3600 with b450 motherboard that has it's bios updated.

Ryzen 5 3600, MSI B450 tomahawk Max, 16gb of DDR4 your choice (above 3000 works pretty well)

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

Solid build, as long as you have enough storage that looks fine to me.

What games do you play/work do you do?

What refresh rate does your monitor support?

What resolution do you play at?

What FPS are you targeting?

i5 8600 - RX 6600 - Fractal Nano S - 1080p 144Hz

Unless you're playing games that are highly threaded, I'd just save the money for now. Not sure why people are suggesting dumping all of that money on a new board, CPU and RAM when it would net like, 20%ish IPC boost at most.

It was just one person who suggested that, I also have no idea why and that is impossible to then justify without knowing the use case.

Like telling someone who never carries passengers to buy a 7 seater car just because it has a bigger engine...

There's 2 of them that did! But yeah, I totally agree.

It seems to be an expectation about what changes will be wrought by new games coming out after the new consoles are released.  The information about them is they have a lot of multithreaded cores.  It’s possible a 4/4, even a fast one won’t be able to handle them.  Not because of speed but because of thread count.

i agree about waiting.  New information about one of the new consoles is apparently about to appear, so additional information is on the horizon.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
