Alright, the classic "Video Editing & Gaming Build", but seriously. I'm looking to spend something like $1000 to $1200 on a new build, and my main question is: what is the best general purpose cpu & gpu combo. I still know pretty little about AMD in general, particularly the sku levels of Ryzen & Radeon. But from what I can tell, a Ryzen 5 3600 is about the best for the price point. Basically all I care about is speed & snappiness, case, looks & storage amount are low priority. One thing I do kind of care about is noise, on mine current build the psu fan is crazy loud (why I have a 650w psu in this new one).

Here is what I have so far:

Depends on the exact software, you may do better with AMD GPU or Intel CPU.

But the PSU has problems with ocer power protection, Samsung SSDs are typically overpriced, case has limited arflow and board is not good for the price.

A few issues with your list. The PSU you picked has had issues recently and you can get an equal performing SSD for cheaper, Motherboard is pricey for what it offers plus there is no reason for you with the parts you have to get X570 unless you plan on using gen4 SSDs in the future. The case you have picked while nice has pretty limited airflow. Another big thing is you picked parts with mail in rebates, you aren't actually going to pay the cheaper price you'll pay full price then if you have the time or patience you can send in rebates for them and then get checks back for the money, most people dont do that. Heres a list I have updated to correct some of your issues, anyone else feel free to give input on it as well.

It all looks good, but the tomahawk will need a bios update to work with ryzen 3000. The tomahawk max comes with an updated bios and should be around the same price. If it’s more then it’s probably worth just getting the non max motherboard and updating it yourself

The standard Tomahawk comes with the bios update already, I've ordered several from amazon and one or two from newegg in last couple months that have all had the 3000 ready bios installed already, it's been long enough that most sellers have gotten the new stock with the updates, if you don't know if it does or not you can always ask the seller before purchase. The Max is like $15 to $20 more depending on where you get it.

I've also seen this several times, but even if it didn't have an update you can do the upgrade yourself, if you're able to follow instructions you won't have any problems on doing so...

Great thanks for all the input! I'll definitely change out the power supply and case etc. Really pretty cool that everytime I come here I get so much info. Last dumb question, are ryzens unlocked by default, or is it like Intel K skus?
