CPU for editing 4k GoPro videos...

Hi All,

I'm planning to build a new rig to replace my very aging AMD FX 8350, and don't need too much performance, but i do need to be able to edit 4K GoPro videos. Also might play an occasional game. In the future I may want to hook up a VR headset.

So the question is, Ryzen 5 3600 - enough for the task? What's the difference with 3600X besides slightly higher clock? Is extra $160 for the 3700X worth considering? I would much rather spend the extra cash on a GPU at the moment than overpay for CPU.

Thanks for everyone's input in advance!

The 3600 should do just fine. LTT actually did a video on this if you're interested.

Canada. Currently two 1080p 16x9 monitors @60Hz but will eventually switch to new monitor, 21x9 1440p or 16x9 4k, not sure yet.

Budget for new Case / CPU / Mobo / RAM / GPU / SSD hopefully under C$1,000
Will re-use PSU

Allot of the effects in DaVinci Resolve are GPU accelerated. Nvidia GPU's have a vram usage bug with resolve which is kind of annoying. With my 3900x, I usually notice my GPU being pinned even when exporting using Cineform. a 3600 would do just fine.
Also, as I'm sure you know, resolve has another oddity when rendering using nvenc, if you dont adjust keyframes, then the quality will look like crap. and the keyframes is more or less your quality. I tend to export using Cineform then transcode it with ffmpeg via cli for actual compression.

Vegas is really easy to use and appears on the humble bundle all time, or there's their lower end magix movie studio if you don't need masking, if resolve ends up with issues.

Looks like you can already just about get an R5 3600 + RX 5700 for that budget, can't really do much better than that. Need to look more into resolve and navi though, it had issues at launch.

With a new PSU for reference whenever you buy one.
