I just got a RTX 2060 Super, plugged it into my Samsung Q6FN TV via an HDMI 2.0 cable, set up the TV to handle it as such, went into NVIDIA Control Panel and set the resolution to native (3840x2160) and the refresh rate to 60Hz (before I upgraded my GPU, I was using 1920x1080@30Hz).

But now I'm getting mild stuttering while playing videos, at 2160p and at 1080p just the same.

All my drivers are up to date and all connections have been cleaned. What could be causing this? I'm not using a top-of-the-line-gold-plated-with-bells-and-sugar-on-top HDMI cable, but it's a decent one. As I believe I'm on the up and up with hardware and software, I suspect it could be the cable.

My setup:

Intel Core i7-4790

16 GB RAM

Gryphon Z97 Motherboard

GeForce RTX 2060 Super

480 GB SSD

600W PSU

do you have another monitor plugged in? does the tv have a display port, the most likely source of the problem is the hdmi cable or port on the tv.

I would try using either display port (if it's an option) or steal an HDMI cable from something else in the house just to test if your cable is on it's way out. If you swap out the cable with another one and the problem persists, I'd open up something like AIDA61 or Afterburner (something that can monitor your hardware with a graph) and check to see if there's any types of spikes when the stutter happen. You can at least start to narrow down which component is having an issue and you can take it from there.

Thanks for the replies!

The stuttering happens both when playing videos and when gaming. It's mild and intermittent, but it keeps bothering me.

I don't think it's a driver issue, as I formatted my PC and installed everything from scratch when I got the new GPU.

Unfortunately, the TV doesn't have DisplayPort. The HDMI cable I'm using is brand new, I got it last week to take advantage of the HDMI 2.0 capabilities of the TV and new GPU. But I'm gonna get another one anyway to test if the current one is faulty, and also test the other HDMI ports on the TV.

  • 3 weeks later...

So, the problem persisted after I tested new HMDI cables and TV ports. Then I kinda gave up and just put up with the stuttering.

Then came up the Techquickie video about TVs for gaming, from which I learned (shocker!) there are websites specialized in TV reviews and settings.

Silly me. I just ran to rtings.com and got the optimal settings for my TV, which disabled a bunch of post processing options -- which were actually causing the stuttering.

So, problem solved. Hope this helps someone who, just as me, neglected the TV settings :)

Thanks again for the replies!

Oh yeah, TVs are terrible for gaming if they aren't set up right,  but if they are most of them are acceptable.
