Linux Install Help!

I don't know anything about Linux so I'm trying Ubuntu. What's the difference? Also, PowerISO requires a key.

As long as you're not going to edit an ISO, PowerISO will be fine. And Xubuntu is a FAR more lightweight distro of Ubuntu, pretty much designed to run on older hardware. It made my Dell a ton faster switching over. Also, make sure you download the i386 ISO, not the AMD64 ISO. You can even make it look a ton like Windows. This is what my netbook looks like.

Xubuntu pretty much is Ubuntu, the reason for its lightness on resources is thanks to the Xfce desktop environment. Tho there are other distro's that are light and worth looking at such as CrunchBang.

Seeing as how you are on page two of your thread and still seem to not understand I will compile a basic guide for you.

1. Download Xubuntu.
2. Download Universal USB Installer.
3. Run Universal USB Installer.
4. Select Xubuntu from the drop down menu.
5. Hit the Browse button and search for the Xubuntu ISO image.
6. Select the USB drive from the last drop down menu.
7. Hit Create and let it do its magic.

From there you can just reboot, and make sure your machine is setup to boot from USB before any HDD's.

Suggestion:

 

• Software: UNetbootin, make sure it formats the USB drive
• Bios: USB detection -> Auto or USBHDD
• Bios: Boot type -> Bios, NOT UEFI

 

Note:

• Troubleshooting: Assuming you're trying a Linux distribution with a live-install ISO, try a different distro (like Ubuntu vs. Linux Mint).
• Troubleshooting: If the bios black screens after trying to boot from USB, either the boot sector on the USB is corrupt or it's the bios settings (usually the ones I listed above)
• Smug Comments: Don't feel bad about not getting it to install with a USB. With older motherboards and even some newer ones, it can be a pain in the ass - even for Linux veterans. CD installs are 100% pain free.
• System Requirements: Really old hardware will work with live-installs, even 512MB (for Ubuntu, with bellow 256MB it is suggested to use the alternate-install ISO).

Okay, as someone who has installed linux on an old P4 dell optiplex in the past, I want to say don't bother with USB booting, its too much hastle to get working.

Burn a CD and install that way. If you don't have a drive you need to find one (will probably have to be an IDE drive too) 

 

I don't recall which I used at the time, but I do have 32bit disks lying around so I will assume that is how I installed it.

Burn to disc and boot from it. Afaik, there's no other requirement.

Nevermind, I had a faulty USB. I barrowed my sisters flash drive because I thought that the USB I was using was faulty, I was right. Running Linux right now.

Just one more question. When I download software such as http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/%C2'> what version do I download?

I downloaded flash but now ads are all glitchy and the video pushes over to one side of the player. I can't even tell what I'm watching.

It's a prefab from Acer. Do you still have that file of my system specs? You know, the file that said it's a 'Northwood' processor.

Also, I think I just downloaded the installer. Where would I find it?

And all pictures are shaded wierd. It's not a gradual change from dark to light. It's like dark-lighter-lighter-lighter-lightest.
