Upgarde Laptop RAM

Hi, I have an Asus X412FL with 8gb of ram (4gb soldered, 4gb dimm) planing to add more ram but I'm confused, should I just add a 8gb stick (12gb total) or should I just go all in and add a 16gb stick (20gb total), I'm a collage student and I have a really tight budget

Prices (based on where I lived)

8gb   = $27

16gb = $59

According to ASUS' specification list you can use up to 12GB of RAM in that laptop (so 4GB soldered + 8GB DIMM):

Couldn't confirm that though, it's possible it does actually support 16GB DIMMs.. But I doubt it.

Make sure when/ if you install new ram, it is the exact models supported by the manufacturer. it should say in the manual what models are compatible. I have had waaay too many laptop upgrades fail because laptop manufacturers dont allow just any ram. Its really annoying.
