Testing HDMI Cable

r0otctrl

I just purchased an LG C9 and an "Ultra Speed" cable to boot. I'm just wondering if anybody has any idea how I can verify that the cable is "Ultra Speed" as advertised?

Thanks

if you get 4k, HDR, and 4:4:4 chroma sub sampling all at the same time with out the picture either being fuzzy or cutting out its a high speed HDMI cable. I had troubling getting all of that with my 4k apple tv until I got this HDMI cabe: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N343SBS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If yours gives you trouble this one has been great.

"Ultra Speed" sounds like an ULTRA rip off. Hopefully it wasn't an expensive cable. You can get great image quality from a $10 HDMI cable.

How can I test HDR and 4:4:4 Chroma sampling? Would those be settings on the TV itself? Also, is there a specific piece of content somewhere that I can use to test those things?

Thanks

Nah, it wasn't that expensive. Well, it was kind of expensive. It cost me $23 CDN. I kind of wanted to get my hands on a cable that would work well with 2.1 since eventually PC components will support it and my TV is already 2.1.

Those are settings you would enable on your device. If you’re running an Nvidia graphics card it’s in the Nvidia control center thingy. The scenario I mentioned is pretty much the only time you would need a higher quality hdmi cable (until hdmi 2.1 becomes more popular).

Anything over $30 is a rip off for an HDMI cable. But, there are times where a cheaper hdmi cable has given me display problems.

Okay good $23cad is acceptable.

Agreed! Going to far on the cheap side can cause issues.

Okay, so I've enabled the "Ultra Deep Color" setting on my TV, which is the chroma subsampling to my knowledge. But how can I test HDR? I've looked in my TV and Nvidia settings and can't find nothing.

Capture.thumb.PNG.7c3d3daf5db0358b4f8f0aa3e2db12a8.PNGYou should enable some of the stuff in this setting if you want. I personally like the 10 bit color and YCBCr 444. For HDR you enable it in windows display settings. Keep in mind that once you enable HDR it will make all SDR content (including your desktop look washed out). You should be manually enabling and disabling it whenever you want to use it. Its a giant pain in the booty so I don't use it.

Ok, nice. That's where it was.

It's weird. My TV, an LG C9 has a 10 bit screen, but there's no 10 bit option ?? The only option is 8 bpc. I've tried changing other settings to see if it was contingent on some other setting, but no matter what I set everything to the only option is always 8 bpc :/ Does that mean the cable doesn't have enough bandwidth?

Also, is 4:4:4 preferred for PC/gaming stuff, whereas 4:2:0 is better for movies/tv?

3840×2160 @ 60 Hz 8 bpc is the maximum limit for HDMI 2.0, and there are no graphics cards that support higher than HDMI 2.0 yet.

4:4:4 won’t really make a difference in pc gaming, but it should make text look a bit better. It’s a less compressed image, so if you can you might as well. Here is an rtings article on it: https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/chroma-subsampling

That's the max, even for 2.0b?

Also, then how did buddy get 10 bit? Is it because he's running 1440p?

Maybe, or could be running with YCbCr 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 subsampling.

Below is the image he posted a second ago: 4:4:4, 10-bit, 1440p.

Also, is 3840×2160 @ 60 Hz 8 bpc the maximum even for 2.0b?

You would need to use DisplayPort for that, not HDMI :P But that's not something TVs have.

Yes, it is the maximum for all of the HDMI 2.0 family.

Ok, damn. Lame that there's not a single DP port on this TV.
