Just for reference, I presume if the motherboard doesn't have molex connectors, you need powered risers?

More or less yes.

The molex/additional power connectors on the motherboard provide auxiliary power to the pci slots. This balances the load so they don't pull too much from the 24pin and cause it to short out.

With 3 GPU's you should be fine on most nearly all motherboards without powered risers. Once you move into 4+ you want to use powered risers or have the additional power via molex directly on the motherboard.

Always check the motherboards manual for details on how many cards it supports. THis will give you an idea if you need to use powered risers or not.

I have heard of powered risers catching fire, especially cheap Chinese ones.

Always check the wiring with at the very least a visual inspection. Defects happen in any industry; The amount of risers out there compared to the few reports of failure/damage is small amount by industry standards. There are more instances of people burning out their motherboard because they didn't use powered risers when they should have.

Depending how paranoid you are, run through it with a multimeter to ensure there are no bridges or issues.

You could always look into creating your own powered risers from the non powered. http://blog.zorinaq.com/?e=44

I ordered 2 H81 Pro motherboards from NCIX last month for 12 cards so I don't need powered risers.

It should be fine, you could always get two powered risers so each motherboard is only running 5 GPU's with PCI power draw. But running 6 on each shouldn't be a problem without powered risers. The board does have additional power to balance the pci load.

I haven't used that motherboard nor looked into the motherboard greatly, so I can't say for certain.

You can always look up others who are running the same set up.
