Time to delid the cpu????

L1-

So I have been using 7700k since it came out.

But I did not overclock or tune it myself since I once had very little knowledge about overclocking, the chip used to run with the Asus's ez tuning or XMP which caused a lot instabilities while playing CSGO (fps spikes, yikes). Recently I was considering upgrading my specs to 9900k to help out with the fps, however, as I was looking up overclocking tips I actually brought my 7700k up to 5.0 Ghz with 1.32v (And it passed the stress test and had been operating normally for nearly a month). Eventually I found there was no need for a 9900k upgrade since I only play csgo on my pc, but the temperature of the cores gave me some concerns (I have a tower fan cooler from cooler master).

At idle it does not look great because I have a powerful heater running in my house and it feels having a sauna in the room. And having fan speed running at maximum (1700pwm) at 90C is not really what I could bear with.

So, delid the chip or not? Or could there be a cooler to save it?

just no,lower you clocks or better cooler

you risk $400 worth of cpu & mobo for a couple degrees cooler?

Delid! Recently delidded a 7700k@5ghz, 1.325v and using a Noctua D-14 with gave 60c on full load in Intel Burn Test with AVX. (ambient 25C+) You can expect a little higher depending on the CPU cooler - If your using a Evo 212 I would expect ~75c

I heard people talking about 10-20 degree cooler when the chip is delided, but I dont think I would lower my clocks because its kinda a huge deal to gain more fps on csgo for me.

That sounds great! Actually I am using a Cooler Master Hyper D92 at the moment, dont know if its better than EVO 212 or not. I will definitely look deep into the delidding process!

You can delid and get pure copper ihs for it if you don’t want to mess with liquid metal. I heard it’s same effects as lm

It's a little worse. But try it out! You can always get another cooler after. The newer Evo 212 black edition is great for the price and silent too.

Delid process:

Put cpu in delid tool and turn the screw until cpu top (heatspreader loosen)

Open delid tool and remove cpu heatspreader.

Clean CPU die and heatspreader using isopropyl

Use old credit card or similar plastic thing to remove excess sealing (optional, as this will make no difference, unless you want to glue cpu heatspreader back on)

Lay CPU without heatspreader in mobo (in cpu socket)

Put on some thermal paste on the die (you can use liquid metal, but for safety you can use Kryonaut or similar silicon based paste)

Put on heatspreader and close socket lid

Put on thermal paste on cpu heatspreader (as you normally would do installing a cpu cooler)

Mount CPU cooler

You could do that or just use the stock nickel plated copper heatspreader :)

The 7700K is still a great CPU and a delid would allow you to use it for another few years with a good overclock.

The delid process is quite easy and risk free if you buy the correct tools and do some research before you start.

Do not use a "normal thermalpaste" but instead you should use liquid metal from thermal grizzly.

I after i delidded my 8600k I got higher clocks with lower temps.

Before delid: 4.9ghz 1,38V with 80-85C during stresstest.

After delid: 5.0ghz 1.37V with 65-70C during stresstest.

That is a very small cooler. You should be able to get better temps with just a bigger cooler.

The 212 EVO is better but i would go even bigger with noctua or be quiet.

Edit...

Just make sure the new cooler fits in your case if you want to upgrade.

I agree with this. You get lower temps with liquid metal, but you could use something like kryonaut. If you're using liquid metal, I would suggest gluing heatspreader (IHS) back on, just becase youi dont want do mess up while reinstalling the IHS.

I used a small amount of heat resistant silicone glue in each corner of the IHS when I did my delid ?

At stock speed 4.5 Ghz, on most maps it gives 180-300 fps while playing. At 5.0 Ghz, I gained way much more fps at same locations, I would say around 60-100fps more thus I think it matters a lot.

First get some decent cooler, that should drop your temps fair but, if you not happy with results than delid ?‍♂️

Here is a video of how I use to do it, only thing I would do is using less liquid metal. I always "share" the drop from the die with the IHS, as it's enough:

ye, i think you read same thread i did, guy had gone from LM with standard IHS, to copper and standard (good quality) TIM and copper worked way better (he said he thought his initial LM application wasn't great, but still)

Big thing is its pre-lapped so yeah, you could take a lot of time lapping your own CPU, but if you have the money this is likely more fool proof since its easier then you'd think to screw up lapping, end up at odd angle and not have a good flat and level surface, similarly good kits feature larger surface area then standard.

this is quality name brand iirc https://rockitcool.myshopify.com/products/copper-ihs-for-lga-1150

I would never delid my CPU, never!!!

With a decent top end air cooler like a Noctua and a good case air flow, no mater the ambiance temperature you should be fine.

The idle temp is kind of irrelevant, the full load temp is the one that matters.

That is one of the best aircoolers on the market but and it is huge but will most likely fit in your case.

What type of RAM do you have ? clearance over the ram can also be a problem.

I can also suggest coolers like Noctua U12S and BQ Dark Rock 4.

These cooler are a huge upgrade from your current cooler but not as bulky as Noctua D15.
