Came home from work today and tried turning on my PC. No display. Code 49 on mobo

Things I've Tried

  • Reseating RAM in current slots
  • Removing one dim and trying to turn on
  • Changing RAM to other slots
  • Clear CMOS
  • Repeating 24 Pin just in case it was a power issue
  • MemOK button - continuously reboots system and DRAM light is flashing yellow

Specs

  • Maximus X Hero
  • i7-8700k
  • 2x16GB RAM HyperX. Not sure of speed off the top of my head
  • 1080ti KingPin
  • EVGA G3 1000 W PSU

Any tips or help will be very much appreciated.

Motherboard codes are different for every mobo. What’s 49 for yours?  It should be in your manual.  There may be a manual for you mobo online.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Did some digging on Google and 49 seems related to memory. The manual doesn't state code 49 specifically, but later versions of your mobo state that is could be an issue with the RAM itself, either a bad overclock or a bad module. One article mentioned using memory not on the mobo QVL which caused issues.

Your memory seems to have failed, or been corrupted or messed up in some way. You got other RAM you can try?

EDIT: Manual says that a flashing DRAM light means your DIMMs are not compatible and/or have failed. Says to replace them ASAP.

Thanks for the in depth answer. Unfortunately I dont have any spare laying around. I'll try to stop and grab some tomorrow and check that.

As a side note, is it common for two RAM modules to die at the same time or should I be worried about diving deeper to find the root cause?

RAM is usually pretty reliable in my experience, but I suppose anything is possible. I'd start simple and pick up a new pair and see if that solves it. If not, there may be an issue with with the DIMM slots themselves. Who knows honestly.
