Opinions on my friends build?

cl4nk

My friend with limited knowledge set up this parts list for a gaming pc, looks good to me other than the cpu cooler is overkill but he wont budge on that. Any opinions? Any better cpu/gpu combinations that would be good for <$1000?

Hello @cl4nk .

It's well balanced, but i'd try to get a B450-A PRO with a Ryzen 5 3600 instead of the 2600X

have you looked at the VRM graphs that someone posted on here? just making sure you're recommending a motherboard that has capable power delivery for all of current ryzen CPUs in case this guy wants to upgrade ever.

also if he does get the 3600 he should get 3600 MHz CL16 RAM. i'm pretty sure this kit works well on the msi b450 tomahawk even though it is not on their list. it is a new kit and they don't test every set of memory

That is way too much to pay for a cx550.  The CX is not on par with the quality of other corsair PSUs.  I would also opt for a better 5700xt.

The better cooler is well worth the extra $30 for keeping the system noise down and avoiding thermal throttling.

Get this PSU instead.  AMD also recommends anyone using a 5700xt use at least a 650 watt power supply to account for higher boost voltages.  Much better unit anyway.

I edit the shit out of my posts.  Refresh before you respond.

Same VRM as the Tomahawk. No issue running a 3700X on it.
