I'm new here and had a quick question.  So I built myself a PC very proud since it's my first and I wanted to put in a M.2 in my PC. I'm going with the 2 TB Samsung Evo Plus. I have a ROG Maximus Hero XI (Wi-Fi) Mobo. What I want to know is does it matter if I use the top one or bottom slot in terms of performance? While I'm also asking can someone help me figure out how to transfer over my O.S. to the m.2? I would like to move it there as well from my normal SSD.

There is no difference between using either M.2 slot.

I would recommend reinstalling the OS cleanly on the new SSD. You could try to clone your drive, but I have heard of people not having great experiences with it..

Would it matter if I bought the O.S. through the Microsoft store? What about all my programs I have installed will I lose those?

By cloning you will have all the files, programs, etc.

By reinstalling you'll have to reinstall programs and place the files on your drive again.

Your Windows key is either linked to your hardware or Microsoft account. In either case, the Windows license will:

- not care and still be activated

- ask "did you change hardware" and you can click yes.

Can I ask what cloning software you'd recommend?

Minitool Partition Wizard.

I don't have personal experience with it, but Dutch technology website Hardware.info did a really good tutorial on how to properly use it.

It is written in Dutch, but the pictures + Google Translate should help you out:
